Biography

1981 - August
On August 19th, Neil and Chris meet by chance in an electronics shop on the Kings Road. Realizing they have a common interest in dance music, they begin to write together. Initially they call themselves West End; later they come up with the name Pet Shop Boys, a name derived from some friends who work in a pet shop in Ealing. "We thought it sounded like an English rap group".

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the import price tag - get it and start dancing!, January 13, 2004

I'm giving this CD 5 stars from the perspective of a pretty serious PSB fan. The radio edit and 12 inch version are really good, the Lemon Jelly Remix is decent, but what the mix that I haven't stopped playing is the Eric Prydz Remix. It really grooves in a retro-style way (some of the best dance music I've heard in a long time), plus mixed with Neil Tennant's vocals, it is divine. The "We're the Pet Shop Boys" song is interesting and definitely is a nice track for my collection. The only song that I really didn't care for is Transparent. That is the one track where Neil's voice is heavily distorted "electronic style". That seemed to become very popular a few years back, and I think that several really good PSB tracks have been ruined by trying to distort the vocals.

One other note - the disk is marked "copy protected", which I haven't ever seen before. The first time I put in my PC (to rip to my MP3 player) the CD wasn't recognized. Then I took it out, put it back in, and I was able to rip all the tracks with no problem. Anyway, if you are worried about being able to take this music with you in an MP3 player, that shouldn't be a problem.

In summary, this is a great CD, although the price tag is hefty. You'll have several great new tracks to listen to ... tracks that will rank up there with my favorite PSB tracks. Great to hear the Boys producing top quality work. I highly recommend it for any true PSB fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny..., May 27, 2004

It seems that the Pet Shop Boys just keep improving on their music -- age has not slowed them down. This is a throwback to their old style with heavy beats and catchy lyrics. I especially like the new single Miracles as well as the song "We're the Pet Shop Boys" -- its an interesting song with tidbits of past songs like "What Have I Done to Deserve This." Although this import is a bit expensive, PSB fans should not hesitate owning this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Single, June 13, 2006

And even better considering the Tennant/Lowe partnership was in the latter part of its second decade at the time of this release. Miracles is, in its seven and twelve inch formats, a very touching love song with a sentimental lyric, a great melody and typically lush PSB instrumentation and production. It sways very gently. But it's the thunderous Eric Pryz remix ( exclusive here ) that really got me hooked and ultimately led to my purchase of this Japanese import. Seven-plus minutes of pure electro-house bliss.
