A masterpiece that reads like a great novel and weaves together in one opus an understanding of Bonhoeffer’s theology, the complex and tragic history of 20th century Germany, and the human struggle of a true Christian hero. Eric Metaxas is claiming his place as the preeminent biographer of Christianity’s most courageous figures.”

THIS WAS GOING TO BE A THREE STAR REVIEW. I read the book and said to myself that it was just an okay book, but I kept having second and third thoughts about it. I do a tremendous amount of reading and very rarely does a book make me want to go back and read large sections and even whole chapters again and again. The title of the book says it all. MIRACLES There is one quote from the book that I keep going back to "If God made everything in the vast universe just as it is simply so that we could exist, we must begin to wonder why. What are we to him that he would do all of this? Why would he make it all so extravagantly, even so unreasonable perfect? If it was all done just for us, the question arises. Who are we?" Read the book to find out why. Eric Metals does a wonderful job of logically helping us think through the questions (Who are we? and Why does God care about us so much?) Thank you Eric for writing this awesome book. FIVE STARS

The first half of the book will woo you with an apologetics on miracles and the statistical improbability of life as an example. "Marveling at this is not inappropriate," Eric writes. His wit surfaces throughout, and his voice maintains a strong presence; he is at once empathetic, authoritative, and discerning.

He writes for the laymen as he delves into scientific realms, including the universe as a closed system versus an open one, relating it all to miracles, naming and quoting many scientists (and their books) who support the idea that science and faith need not be at odds.

The intent is to bring everyone to the table, to ask legitimate questions, give realistic, honest answers, and bring the concept of the miraculous back into discussion. It's a fascinating, faith-filled, and fearless case for miracles, and one that will leave even a hard-lined denier to perhaps see room for reconsideration.

In the second half he shares the miracles that have passed his careful consideration and are from only those he knows personally and trusts. These are stories you will long remember and want to pass on to others. You've probably heard some "miracle" stories before. These particular stories might surprise you. Be prepared to be greatly amazed and encouraged with the stories Eric has chosen to share.

No matter what your perception of miracles, Eric will challenge you, delight you, and cause you to marvel. You'll have many new concepts to wrestle with, such as the notion of a candy-machine God - in answer to the question, "Why do miracles happen to some people and not to others?"

As Eric demonstrates, "We are a distinct mathematical impossibility. Do we simply shrug at this and move on, or dare we consider its implications?"

Some books deserve to be read once, a few must be read many times. Eric Metaxas new book, Miracles, is one of those that must be read and re-read. Metaxas combines great writing, penetrating analysis and moving stories to open the world of miracles to people who may not be familiar with them or may have serious doubts about them.

Metaxas divides his book into two parts. The first part deals with the questions (1) What are miracles and (2) why do they happen? In this part Metaxas first gives a basic definition of miracles. He then deals with the issue of miracles and science. Here he discusses the miracle of life itself and the miracle that the universe even exists. He than tackles some tough questions about miracles. I personally found his answers very convincing and satisfying. Metaxas goes on to talk about biblical miracles. I thought this was one of the best chapters in the book. He does not give you typical Sunday school answers. Metaxas ends the first part by discussing the miracle of the resurrection of Jesus. Here he quotes the likes of John Donne and John Updike to make this a significant chapter.

The second, and longer, part of the book are miracle stories from people Metaxas actually knows so that the miracles have some level of verification to them. The stories in the second part are moving and amazing. In this part Mr. Metaxas divides the miracle stories into different categories like: conversion miracles, healing miracles and angelic miracles. All the stories have a personal flavor and spiritual power that immediately grabs your attention.

I highly recommend this book to everybody. If you are skeptical that miracles can happen, this is a good book to honestly investigate miracles. If you are a believer in miracles, the book can not only strengthen your belief but also inspire you.

This is a book to read several times. Even as a Christian,I don't expect miracles, certainly in this age. But I often don't linger too much in places that make me uncomfortable. As one who respects Eric Metaxas as an author, I thought it would be worth hearing his take on the subject. It was a surprising read. Staring with the apologetics aspect, it deepened my view of God, my sense of awe.The section on the miracles of Jesus was the most profound for me, personally. I really grappled with some of the other miracle stories, but I don't find that to be a negative thing. We never grow to see God in all his wonder and glory if not challenged, especially in our own ideas of how God works. He is always pointing us at Himself and that was the common thread throughout. Metaxas has done a great job of shaking me out of my complacency. This cynical girl came away more humbled in my faith. It's a great conversation starter, even if you're the only one in the room. Get it, read it, discuss.
