I live in an apartment so I couldn't use a big sub (I wanted the S12), and I wanted clean sound. I researched tons of smaller subs and I kept coming back to the S8 so I decided to give it a shot. My setup is mainly for movies and it consists of two Energy C3's for front left and right, Energy XL-C100 for center, and bose 161 for rears (soon being replaced with mirage omnisat micros). Mirage and Energy are manufactured by same company. This sub fits in nicely. I have crossover set at 60Hz and the sound is clean. The level can be turned up pretty high before there is any distortion.
Love the sub so far and it is not even broke in yet. It adds that extra punch I was missing from my movies. It can shake the walls pretty good too for an 8" sub. And why they call this platinum, I have no idea, it is like a dark gunmetal gray. Matches well with anything black i.e. not an eyesore.

I can hardly say enough good about this sub. I have replaced an older Bose Lifestyle 5 Series 2. I read good things about Mirage and even had a demo of this sub at a local high end retailer. I hooked it up and I am more pleased than I thought I would be. It can thump the house if you want it to. I like that you can hear bass and not just feel it. It's a very musical sub. Even in a large room, I think this would do the trick.

Best Audio Purchase I've Made in Years,

I recently rediscovered my vinyl and CD collections after many years of being too busy to listen. I bought this sub to supplement my Wharfedale Diamonds which are a similarly great bargain. I also purchased an inexpensive Harman Kardon receiver to power the lot. Let me say, I have owned several subs over the years. I've had some that reached deeper and played louder but none that were more musical than this one. The bass is powerful and tight... a perfect complement to the sound of the Wharfedales. Build quality is exceptional - much more elegant than the HSU Research sub I use on my home theater set up. This sub is also quite compact compared to most.. but don't let the small size trick you into thinking it won't perform.
I purchased mine from Vanns thru Amazon. Their service was exceptional. Hurry, do not let this incredible bargain pass you by. There are lots of good subs out there but none that I auditioned came close to this one for sound, build quality and overall value!

This is the first "Real Quality"subwoofer I've owned. It replaces a Bose unit which I bought on sale some years back. All I can say is WoW!!!! Any cheap sub will crack the windows if turned up high enough. But if you want something with a smooth tight bass that augments your music and seems to disapear, then this is one of them.Of any piece of audio equipment,a subwoofer is in actualality a "musical instrument".Speakers, in general, are made to reproduce the full audio spectrum which are made up of multiple instruments. But a subwoofer is dedicated to the lower seqment(somewhere from about 120Hz and lower). The Mirage OMNIS8 does this with class. And if called upon,it will rock the foundation with the opening scene from "Star Wars".

Now reaching the 50 hour break in on this sub. It has been amazing. It is set up with a H/K 55 receiver and polk audio speakers. It blends in very well. Movies are exciting, shaking everything in the apartment. At both loud and soft volumes it is very tight and accurate. New excitement has been added with the new depth from this sub. An excellent buy, bought it from Vanns as a closeout item for about $250. For the price and size, this sub packs a large punch.

Just a bit confused,

The manual says that the filter needs to be set to "on" if your receiver doesn't have frequency control for the sub. My Yamaha receiver automatically outputs all frequencies below 150Hz to the sub but there is no control. So I set the filter to "on". However, the sub did not work in this mode although my frequency setting was all the way to 120Hz on the sub. Had to turn the filter off for the sub to work i.e. red light became green. Anyone have that experience?

Let me start by saying that the point in getting a subwoofer is not to see how loud it can get. That it's not necessary to shake the foundation of your house in order to label a sub worthy.A 70$ sub can do that just fine.I got the Mirage because it produces warm tones and a clean vibration with no distortion.I set the level to about 1:00 and the frequency at 12:00.In this sequence it tailors to my needs just fine. One nice feature is you can set it to auto mode so it can shut off automatically when there is no signal detected.I've found this sub to be a great addition to my Denon mini system.I also got the Audioquest sub 1 cable to go with it.It runs from my mini system into the sub via the lfe terminal. Also got the Monster SW200 surge protector for the sub and mini system. It's important to note that the sub and cable need at least 50 hours of break-in before it can be judged.I've reached that stage and all I can say that even if this sub was full price I would still buy it.It's that good.
