Bought these to replace some smaller mirage avs200 surrounds, i am running these with epos els3's for front, Energy c-c1 for center, Mirage Prestige s10 for sub, using the Mirage at the rear. With this setup including a Yamaha RX-V861 receiver and a 100" Marantz VP12-S4 projector viewed in a dark room from 13ft away i have been very pleased with results.

Initially a little bright sounding as the woofers need some running in, once played for a 100 or so hrs this brightness is balanced well with the more flexible midrange and bass frequencies ( i found Mirage speakers in general sound this way but "warm up" in time). Addiionally they cross-over very well with this sub giving a very precise location of the lower frequencies, something i was missing with the smaller Mirage surrounds.

I listen to a lot of music but especially enjoy DTS mixes (Dire Straits-Brothers in Arms is the best i've heard) and for this you really need a pair of balanced surrounds, for the size of system i have described i would consider these to be perfectly suitable. Movies are greatly improved with the excellent dispersion radiating tweeter arangement giving that dispersed sound where i need it, in the rear which is a great solution to buying another set of speakers for rear channels in a 7.1 setup. My epos els3's provide excellent accuracy in the front main channels and the Energy c-c1 is an amazing center channel for the money (150 used) i've tried smaller CC's and come to the conclusion size counts, voice are freed up from sounding boxed in resulting in lifelike accuracy with punch.

Although i am giving you a review of the Mirage OMD5 bookshelf speakers i wanted to provide those who are considering these speakers with a reference of how i have used them in the hope of it being useful. My score 8.5/10 but at this price and for my purpose they are a steal.

I purchased (4) OMD 5's for surrounds, (2) OMD 15's for front mains, and a C1 center to replace my 10 year old M&K 750 THX system. I loved my M&K system but due to our limitations with wall mounting side/rear surround speakers I stumbled upon this line in a search for new surrounds that would offer me better installation options, needless to say I took the plunge and purchased an entirely new and matching system. I researched and agonized for months before pulling the trigger and all I can say is that I couldn't be happier!

Botttom line... once these speakers went through the 100 hour recommended break-in they blew away my old system. The sound isn't anything special right out of the boxes, they really do need to break in for 100 hours before they fully come to life, and once they do they will bring a huge smile to your face. Yes, omnipolar sound is a little different than the direct and diploar sounds that I had been used to but the sound stage they produce is amazing to say the least. I used the MCACC auto set-up on my Pioneer and everything just sounds perfect, but I can't wait until they are hooked up to the new Yamaha flagship receiver that will be my next purchase. Movies are significantly more dynamic sounding than my M&K's and music sounds so much more musical. All sound is much more dispersed and deep with no localization. You can't find a better deal for the quality; I dare you to try!

The build and finish on these babies is top notch, not to mention the high WIFE APPROVAL FACTOR, they look and feel high furniture grade (I bought the gloss piano black). Make sure to set your receiver to 6 ohms in order to power them properly; my Pioneer is pushing them at 150 watts x 7 at 6 ohms with no problems.

I have a 6.1 setup witha yamaha receiver. I needed a rear center speaker that was small,I origanally used a nanostat speaker which did just ok. The nanostat performed very well for it's size, but really had to turn down the other speaker levels for good performance. The nano was lacking the midrange I was looking for. The omd5 really fit the bill due to the only placement option I had was cornerd between two couches on an end table. It fit perfect and allowed me to bump the other mirage speaker up to acceptable levels whithout drowning it out. Now my system has a real good punch to it. I couldn't be happier with it's performance. Just an incredible speaker for my application. It really allows for a wider sound spectrum verus a more directional speaker. I can now sit anywhere in the room and get sound from bullets and other misc. sounds coming from all over the place.
I highly recommend this speaker for any 5.1 or 6.1 apllication such as fronts, right and left surrounds, and rear centers where good wall mounting options don't exsist. They really blow away the nanostat line and are still small enough to fit on stands or just about anywhere on a floor and still look modern and attractive whithout taking up floor space.

Revised. After listening to them for a year, I wish I would have purchased the entire Mirage line for my system. For a small room stereo, they sound amazing. For a larger room with a sub, they sound incredible. If you listen to a lot of music, I think you would love these (I like them much better for music than the much more expensive Klipsch I have).

(original review...)
Had never heard of Mirage. Bought these based on reviews. They sound really nice. Piano gloss black finish is gorgeous. Using as side surrounds in 7.1 system. Have Klipsch XF 48s and XF 23 up front, and Mirage OMDRs in rear with Mirage Prestige 10 sub. Can still get most of Mirage OMD line at Vanns- and at big discount. Buy a set from them and they will discount further (I paid $125 each for OMD5s). For a budget system, 2 OMD5s and a sub would sound great. Get them while you can as they are discontinued.
