Detailed Description - How Low Can You Go?

The Omni S8 is the smaller model in our Omni subwoofer lineup. It gets its hard-hitting intensity, with near zero distortion, via a newly developed amplifier that can produce 400 watts of dynamic power and 100 watts of RMS power and a high-output 8-inch driver with a patented Ribbed Elliptical Surround. This proprietary design eliminates surround dimpling, enabling the subwoofer to play lower with greater output and fidelity. The subwoofer’s down-firing port further increases its output by using the floor as a loading surface. In fact, the Omni S8’s frequency response goes down to 27Hz, so it sounds like a much larger subwoofer and sets a new standard in its class.

On the Omni S8’s front panel you’ll find three controls: level, frequency and phase. These accessible controls let you adjust your bass levels with complete ease, as well as facilitate the subwoofer’s acoustical integration with the other speakers in your system. On the back of the subwoofer, high- and low-level inputs, as well as a power mode selection increases both installation and connection flexibility. There’s no denying that the Omni S8 will bring powerful, tight and undistorted deep bass performance to any of our home theater systems; however, we recommend pairing it up with our Omnisat®, Uni-Theater® and Nanosat product lines.

The Science Behind the Mirage Sound: Exclusive Mirage Technologies

Ribbed Elliptical Surround Technology

Our patented Ribbed Elliptical Surround technology (U.S. patent #6,725,967, Canadian patent #2,407,123) increases excursion, eliminates distortion and raises efficiency on our woofers and woofer-midranges such as those in the OC-45. While a speaker surround (suspension) permits cone movement, our proprietary Ribbed Elliptical Surrounds permits identical movement in both directions for near zero distortion and improved resolution. Our Ribbed Elliptical Surrounds also allow for a more cone surface and greater peak to peak movement than conventional designs, resulting in greater efficiency. These attributes enable our woofers and woofer-midranges to move more air with less distortion, ultimately allowing them to play lower in frequency with greater clarity and dynamics. This is especially helpful in smaller or slender speakers, like the OC-45, by providing better dynamics and lower distortion (attributes normally associated with larger speakers) while being easy to blend with subwoofers for a more seamless system.

What the experts are saying about the Nanosat® CC…

“The Omni S8 packs an incredible amount of value into its compact, affordable package. Its sound delivers with an exclamation point, over all types of music, home theater, and gaming material, providing a terrific combination of weight, punch, speed, and detail with only minor flaws that never detract from the presentation. 'Tight' is the word that best describes this product - while it may be missing a couple features and a smidge of ultimate fidelity, it delivers so much for the price that you barely notice. The Omni S8 is an extremely formidable contender in its price bracket, and must be auditioned by all shoppers anywhere near it.”- Home Theater Review (June, 2010)

Sure, there are lots of other subwoofers out there. There are cheaper ones, bigger ones, more powerful ones.

The beauty of the Mirage S8? I plugged it in, tweaked the very flexible controls for 5 minutes, and have pretty much left it alone ever since. It just works. I have yet hear it sound strained, hear it bottom out, or notice a gap in low bass in any way. It lurks in the shadows until needed, and then rises to the challenge. I love it for both movies and music.

I'm a big fan of the sleek case design and compact size. The S8 is a great way to fill a small to medium-sized room with tight, deep bass.

This is the best 8" sub money can buy. I had this for 2 years and will never get rid of it. Its PERFECT for small rooms and especially apartments because it doesnt shake pictures off the walls but it FILLS the sound beautifully. The bass is SOOOOO CLEAN. Great sounding sub. Ive had 10" subs that you grab from CC and Bestbuy for under 2 bills and they are garbage. Look around and you can probably nab this for under $300.

I was very happy with the quality of sound from this sub-woofer. However, recently it stopped working and only emits a high-pitched buzz, with or without input. Online investigation reveals that lots of people find this speaker self-destructs after three years. I live in an apartment building so I definitely did not stress it at all. Certainly won't buy this make next time. Very disappointing.

You wouldn't belive what this little-big sub can do!!
It's not only that it shakes the room wit the bass pressure (it does), but the quality of the sound. This is not a "boombox", is really a speaker that let you appreciate the music, of any kind, but specially jazz, with very detailed sound from the acoustic bass and the drums.
My listening room is small, 12'X15', but I think it would do even in medium sized ones.
Totally recomended.

I did not purchase this through Amazon. I paid significantly less than the full price, and I feel I got a great sub at a great price. At the full asking price ($368), there are a lot of subwoofers to consider and this is just one of them. Many good subs start at the $300-$350 range and choosing one can be tough.

Price aside, this is a great sub for a smaller to medium size room. I find it extremely musical. It is not sloppy with music and keeps up with a wide variety of stuff my household listens to. This Mirage packs a nice punch with movies too, especially if I turn up the sub level higher for movies (but I usually leave it at my receiver's default). I can feel vibrations in movie action scenes with no problem and this little guy can rattle my walls if I set it high enough.

Don't let the 8in driver turn you off, unless you have a large room to fill up. Velodyne and Hsu both make nice subs with 8in drivers, and both of them are good sub brands too.

This sub does take time to break in (the manual says 50 hours and that seems right). I found after a couple of weeks, I had to re-run the calibration program in my receiver because the bass slowly crept loader as the sub broke in.

I fully recommend this sub if you can get it for less than full retail. At full retail, it is still a great sub, but you might want to make sure you like it over all the others at that price.

I bought this sub in September using the great deal that was available at the time from Electronics Expo for $195.00 and free shipping. I held off on leaving a review because I wanted to make sure it held up. In short........This is a great sub. I have it set up in my bedroom with a small system and it has made a OK system fantastic. I broke it in for four days and over the past months it has (to my ears) gotten richer and more responsive.

I know this is all subjective but I found the same thing for my Martin Logan. The longer I run it, the better it sounds. All in all, this is a great sub for full price but is a RIDICULOUS deal from Electronics Expo.

Gonna throw the shipping box away now. I think it's gonna be OK.....unlike the POS Boston Acoustics that lasted just past the end of the return period for Amazon.

Verified Purchase
This powered subwoofer makes all the difference to my cinema and music listening experience. I was operating without a base module for a while, and when I hooked this baby up - WOW! I previously used a Bose non-powered subwoofer arrangement, but this blows that away. Also, the newer A/V receivers work better with a powered subwoofer. I did a lot of research before purchasing this and had some concerns that the size might be too small. But it does a great job of delivering the punch for me. I use it in my great room (combination living room, dining room, foyer, and kitchen), which has wooden floors and 12 foot ceilings. I also wanted something with a small footprint so that my wife wouldn't object. It fits unobtrusively behind one of my winged chairs.

product looks good and worked ok for its small size. After 18 months I got a loud hum out of it and thats all. The amp went bad. after doing some reading this is an issue with this product. I took the amp out and reviewed it ( I am an electrical engineer and have designed power supplies and amp for many years in high volume products). The construction of all the internal components looked real good. real clean layout on the board, and everything was tied down nicely. So whats the cause of the failure... In general electronic failures are due to heat or over voltage stress. I noticed one resistor (one of two) was discolored and its mounted up off the board. This was probably done to get more heat out of the 1/4 watt resistor since the resistor legs conduct heat. This is not a good design practice. The resistor measured good so its probably the result of another component failure. Hard to tell without a schematic. So in my opinion there is a design issue with the board where some component is being overstressed and failing. Since there have been other reports of the exact same issue this leads me to think its a design problem and I would not recommend this product. I just order a polk audio 12" subwoofer to replace it and it was less money.
