Winona Sylvia Glen, a disenchanted painter, is frustrated by the whims of society that preclude her recognition as an artist. Carla, a secondary school health teacher, poses as a supporter of the arts in myriad long-distance letters to her. However, the reality of the relationship becomes the antithesis of courtship. The painter enters a challenging lottery contest where the winner will be granted relocation and fulfillment of personal desires in a quaint town known as Paradise. The novel is a study of the woman artists psyche as Sylvia progresses from arrested ego of her former identity into a more compassionate woman. The plot, like a painting, is interwoven with the poems Sylvia composes as sketches for her canvasses. Memories and dreams recorded in her journal are relative to her survival. Both art and life are a mirage for Sylvia, who learns the truth of nature (including human nature), does not exist except in the mind of each of us. Mirage is a journey that begins in southwest Florida and finally is completed in the desert.
