Book Description

February 5, 2004
From the acclaimed author of True North comes a moving novel about unexpected destinies and the timelessness of true friendship, set in Oregon’s scenic wine country.

Hailed by reviewers from coast to coast, True North marked the exhilarating debut of Kim Kafka’s writing career. Now Kafka takes us to another captivating corner of the world, as seen through the eyes of a remarkable young mother named Miranda Perry.

Miranda has risen to the top of San Francisco’s competitive culinary world, and investors are willing to help her launch her own restaurant. She is also a successful single parent, building an endearing relationship with her little boy, Ruben. But her life suddenly takes a different turn when she learns that her father has died, leaving the family vineyard to Miranda. Returning to Oregon, she leaves city life behind her. An adventuresome lifelong friend, Bridie, soon joins Miranda in Oregon after sustaining a debilitating injury. By returning to their roots, both women find unforeseen healing and hope, while helping each other through the challenges of accepting fate.

Lyrical yet explicitly perceptive, Miranda’s Vines weaves an unforgettable portrait of survival—both physical and emotional—with the rich textures of vineyard life. This stirring combination is sure to take Kim Kafka’s profile to new heights.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Following her father's death at the start of this spirited novel by Kafka (True North), San Francisco chef Miranda Perry returns with her six-year-old son, Ruben, to Perry Hill, her family's vineyard in Oregon wine country, where she is almost immediately faced with a life-altering decision. Pressured by her father's loyal colleagues (who are like family to her), she must decide whether to give up the possibility of starting her own restaurant in San Francisco and move back to Oregon permanently. Meanwhile, she is horrified to learn that her best friend, Bridie, a sled-dog racer, has been helicoptered off the Iditarod course in Alaska with severe injuries. Bridie sinks deeper and deeper into depression after the accident, and Miranda insists on bringing her back to Perry Hill. Meanwhile, she takes in a recently orphaned 12-year-old girl named Estrella, hearing the echoes of her late husband's motto, "Thou shalt not stand idly by." With her San Francisco job in jeopardy and new obligations to consider, Miranda's decision to stay or go becomes more pressing. Enter BevCorp, the Goliath of beverage corporations, intent on picking off small independent vineyards in the area. As mysterious criticisms of Perry Hill and neighboring Ruby Throat appear in the press, Miranda teams up with the staff to save the reputation of the vineyard and her father, eventually realizing that she is just as dependent on her family and friends as they are on her. The characters' voices (particularly those of vineyard workers for whom English is a second language) are inconsistent, but Kafka describes the landscapes of Oregon and Alaska with great warmth and authority. Readers who like to cheer on the underdog will relish this tale of grit and determination in the face of daunting circumstances.

From Booklist

What would you sacrifice in the name of friendship? What would you risk in the name of love? Since college, Miranda and Bridie's relationship has been that of sisters, surpassing any friendship by the depth of their commitment. It was Bridie Miranda relied upon when her husband died before their son could be born, and it was Bridie Miranda called again when her father died, bequeathing her the struggling Oregon vineyard to which he'd devoted his life. Now it's Miranda's turn. When Bridie, a champion Idatarod sledder, is critically injured, legs paralyzed and dangerously depressed, Miranda brings Bridie back to the vineyard she is reluctantly calling home again. In this lustrous tale of loyalty and devotion, Kafka limns the depths of intimacy and explores the nature of relationships, from mother to son, father to daughter, neighbor to stranger, and friend to friend. In Kafka's sensitive hands, Miranda's compassion is heralded with insightful grace and understanding in a sublime account of personal and emotional challenge and growth. Carol Haggas

5.0 out of 5 stars Rich in relationships and setting, June 23, 2004
By
This review is from: Miranda's Vines (Hardcover)
I am drawn to books that blend a sense of place (environmental and/or social) along with rich relationships and colorful people (and animals). Katfka's writing bought me into such a place in the Oregon Vineyards on a vacation, and I did not want to leave. I knew nothing about the winemaking process, and now feel a sense of what it must be like. This book makes me want to go buy a bottle of Oregon wine and visit a winery! A combination of excellent writing, imagery, and character development, I was disappointed when the book ended. I have interests in multiple areas and I think that is one reason this book appeals to me - organic wine growing, immigrant issues, cooking, iditarid, etc. I want to meet the characters and have a good discussion over a platter of goat cheese and fruit!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kafka Always Leaves You Wanting Another Book To Explore, April 2, 2004

Kimberly Kafka's new novel is so well woven. If you like close friendships, canine friendships, the workings of vineyards including some of the migrants' problems who work them and the trials of a good crop of both grapes and children you'll thoroughly enjoy this in-depth look at the above and more. I wouldn't spoil this great read by giving away too much of the clever plot. I've bought many extra copies to share with friends and family.

5.0 out of 5 stars from a reader who loves the setting and the wine, July 5, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Miranda's Vines (Hardcover)
I couldn't put this book down. It features great characters (and a great love story), a fascinating setting, and wonderful food and drink. I've already recommended the novel to two book groups because Kimberly Kafka makes everything come alive in these pages. She knows a lot about sled dogs and restaurants and vineyards and migrant workers, and she puts it all together in an irresistible story. A terrific book! Can't wait for her next one.
