The Long Wait Is Finally Over!,
By Lynne O'Connell (Watertown, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Miriam Your Toast is Burning (Audio CD)
It has been a LONG time in coming, but finally "Miriam Your Toast Is Burning" is here! Beat Soup's 1st CD "Start From Scratch" is very good and will remain one of my favorites BUT with the new Soup line-up things only get better! I never get tired of the tunes and the lyrics are witty and intelligent. Consumers would do well to purchase "Miriam" AND "Start from Scratch" for good, clean Ska fun.

Miriam was well worth the wait.,

This CD fulfills the promise initially shown on Beat Soup's first CD "Start From Scratch" by presenting Boston's best pop-ska outfit at their best.Like Power Rock-Pop-Ska with killer horns? You got it! Check out the first track, "Bad Head" ("Mal de Tête" to certain French sailors). Prefer ska-instrumentals such as "One Step Beyond"? Listen to "Taxi". Or take a different form of transportation: the bus. The Fifty Seven bus that is, which turns left into Allston and will leave you glad you came along for the ride. Long time Soupsters Dan Cuetara and Tom Healey continue their strong songcrafting and soulful vocals on MYTIB, and are backed by a great horn section (Robin, John, and Karl) along with drummer Johnny Jackson. And a special treat for Boston ska fans: Bass duties are performed artfully - pun intended - by Art Cohen (aka Scratchie), the grizzled veteran of the Boston Ska scene who has played in well known bands such as Ska'd for Life, Steady Earnest, and the Agitators. As well, you'll catch John Cameron (of Bim Skala Bim) adding his signature keyboards on some songs. So... don't leave yourself in an existential quandary like Miriam. Be discerning and buy this CD today!

Fresh, tasty soup!,
By Bruce Cichowlas "music video game creator and... (Framingham, MA USA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Miriam Your Toast is Burning (Audio CD)
The Soup never sounded better than they do here. The engineering is crisp and the production subtle, yielding a clean, excellent presentation of the guitar rhythms and brass riffs. If only there was a way to sound this clear at the average club gig!Good music of any kind is a matter of working within the limits of a genre and thoroughly exploring them. The dry humor of Dan's lyrics plays well with the brightness and drama of the horns and rhythm section. Very tasty! I'm glad that Amazon and others are giving more exposure to this band.
