3.0 out of 5 stars A Bit of a Letdown..., May 26, 2009

This review is from: Miroir Noir Ltd. Edition Deluxe (DVD)
I love Arcade Fire, and was thrilled when I saw video cameras focused on every member of the band during their NEON BIBLE Tour, figuring that it meant a concert DVD was in the works. If one has seen Arcade Fire in concert, then you know that it is an almost religious-like experience.

Unfortunately Win Butler has expressed a general impatience with conventional concert films. To some extent, I can understand this sentiment. However, a great many concert films have not had performers as dynamic on the stage as Arcade Fire. So, in place of a more conventional concert film, we get snippets of songs and a bit of a fly on the wall's perspective of backstage and in the studio. It is stylish in its own way and it does work. That said, I'd really have preferred an entire, uninterrupted concert from this wonderful band.

The bonus DVD is worth getting. Granted, by the time one finishes watching it, one might wonder if "Keep the Car Running" was played on an endless loop (it is featured a number of times on the bonus DVD), but the performances are still unique and lively.

Although nothing will ever take the place of actually being at an Arcade Fire show, I do hope that the band will see fit to eventually release a more conventional (start to finish) concert film.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you are an Arcade Fire fan, you NEED this., June 15, 2009
This review is from: Miroir Noir Ltd. Edition Deluxe (DVD)
Let me just preface this by saying that Arcade Fire is tied for being my favorite band.

Miroir Noir itself is very interesting look at the band. It's more an experiment in film making than a documentary about the making of the album, which had me pleasantly surprised. Also don't expect an extended concert video either. You will just get fragments of something before it moves on to the next thing. Personally, I love this, as it is done very carefully. For example, towards the beginning, you will see the band playing Black Mirror for a minute or two until everything but the violins fade out and the scene changes. I find this very stylish and fun to watch, but it may not float everyone's boat. Just keep that in mind when purchasing.

While you will find music from both albums here (including a very powerful live rendition of "Wake Up" towards the beginning), it's almost exclusively music from Neon Bible. I don't remember hearing anything from the EP.

The editing is very well done, but it won't be breaking new ground for many viewers. There are sections where you will be watching brief live performances, recording of the songs, and sometimes just music overlaying fitting images.

If you aren't familiar with Arcade Fire, then I can't imagine why you would want this. But fans of the band will love to see this. Its definitely one of the coolest music DVDs I own.

As far as the Limited Edition features are concerned, the case is BEAUTIFUL. I am so glad I got this one, despite the extra cost. It opens like an accordion to reveal colorful art and is just plain cool to look at. If fancy cases aren't enough for you, then the bonus DVD featuring live performances should be.

All in all, Arcade Fire fans will go crazy over this DVD. If you are not one of these people, then I don't know why you are still reading anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Hopeful, Exciting, Must-Have, October 2, 2010

I highly recommend any enthused, loving Arcade Fire fan to purchase this dvd and experience the love, hope, sadness, reality, and wonder that is Arcade Fire, their performances, their music, and their whole impact to a person's soul.

I'd read reviews before purchase and I was aware that the dvd was not just a compilation of songs on their Neon Bible tour. It was not a camera recording them playing on stage, it was much more. The dvd is so beautiful and makes you feel like you're there with Arcade Fire. The camera is shaking and at times blurry or sketchy quality, which gives it a very homemade feel, like you were taking the video yourself. The phone calls are both beautiful and real and honest and breathtaking. They can bring you to tears, simply said. The whole dvd is filled of raw emotions. Besides the feeling, you also see a bunch of new (and seemingly personal) footage of the band. It's as if you're spending time with them, not watching a dvd.
