5.0 out of 5 stars Works great and provides surprisingly long battery life
We received our item about two weeks ago and have been surprisingly pleased with it. It operates on one 'D' battery, which is visible between the upper and lower segments, as the items appears in pictures. On the bottom there's a ring like on a keychain for you to use as the attachment point for your mirror ball. Only the ring on the bottom (and whatever is attached to...

3.0 out of 5 stars Works well, but..
I purchased this motor along with a new 12 inch mirror ball to use when I'm DJing. I've used it twice in the last four weeks, and am still using the same D cell battery I put in the motor when it arrived. From that perspective, it is great.

My only complaint with this motor is that it is geared a bit high. The mirror ball spins a bit too quickly, causing the...

We received our item about two weeks ago and have been surprisingly pleased with it. It operates on one 'D' battery, which is visible between the upper and lower segments, as the items appears in pictures. On the bottom there's a ring like on a keychain for you to use as the attachment point for your mirror ball. Only the ring on the bottom (and whatever is attached to it) actually rotate.

Mounting it was a small challenge for us, but only because we wanted to attach it to the bottom of a ceiling fan light kit. We accomplished that with several more rings from old keychains.

I bought a package of 8 'D' batteries, thinking the motor might burn through them quickly. But even after leaving the motor on overnight accidentally, the thing is still turning. And we're still on the original 'D' battery.

The mirror ball spins a bit too quickly, causing the reflected images on the floor and walls to move at stomach churning speed. After it had been in use on the same battery for 8 hours, it had slowed to a more normal pace. I haven't found any way to adjust the rotation speed on the motor, and I am hesitant to take it apart. This may not have the same effect on a large mirror ball, say 20 inches or larger.

Works Great and the 12" ball fits just fine. Wish it was a silver color instead of black. Takes away from the pretty of the ball.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple modifications make it better!, May 28, 2011

I required a battery powered spinner for a very large and heavy (10 pound) "Earth balloon" display and I thought I would give this cheap spinner a try.

Right out of the box I realized that this spinner had a fatal design flaw - the battery makes a dead short at the "+" end because the battery inadvertently touches two screws adjacent to the battery terminal. This problem is easily remedied by placing small scraps of electrical tape over the protruding screw heads and installing a small spacer (steel washer) between the battery tip and the "+" terminal.

This product will only support about a 3 pound load without making some simple modifications which will require disassembly and tinkering. The spinner has no bearing to carry loads; a heavy weight will quickly cause the plastic to melt and seize up. This deficiency can be corrected by taking apart the gear case (easy) and slipping a couple of small steel washers around the axle between the gear and the plastic case; these washers carry the load and serve as a bearing surface. Important - lubricate everything, especially the bearing washers, with light machine oil.

Problem number three is the case itself, which is too flimsy for any kind of serious load (only two small screws hold it all together). This issue can be fixed by taping an exoskeleton around the spinner made from a length of perforated plumber's strap. Stick the axle through a hole in the strap and affix it to the bottom half of the spinner (duct tape). Don't tape the strap to the top half of the spinner so you can change the battery. Hang the spinner directly from this steel strap.

My modified spinner worked continuously for a week on one "D" battery and had no trouble handling the heavy 10 pound load! I actually made two modified spinners, just in case, but I didn't need the spare.

Even though this cheap spinner has some shortcomings, I have to give it 5 stars for its adaptability.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fine but a bit noisy, February 3, 2012

Ah, the fun of a disco ball. Seriously, you cannot have a bad day if you come home, dim the lights, and put the spotlight on your disco ball. And it's even better when the ball spins. This little motor is ok, but a bit noisy. Solution? Turn up the music, I suppose!

Purchased this to put inside a homemade air traffic control tower that we constructed for a halloween costume. Mounted it upside down and attached a small LED flashlight to it to create a rotating beacon light on top of the tower. Very happy to find this -- the motor works great: steady, strong, quiet.
