Dr. Daniel Rinaldi was called to a hostage situation taking place during a botched bank robbery. One person was released, but she was too traumatized to be of much help to authorities who needed information on what was going on inside the bank. It was hoped that trauma expert Rinaldi could help her access her memories as everyone else involved were killed.

During the investigation, a series of leads point police toward DA Leland Sinclair who is in the midst of a close gubernatorial campaign. As the campaign heats up a number of incidents take place that puts Sinclair, the detectives investigating the robbery and Rinaldi in grave danger.

Fever Dream was written by Dennis Palumbo, who also wrote Mirror Image. He was a former Hollywood screenwriter, now a licensed psychotherapist in private practice. His extensive experience in both writing and psychotherapy not only gave Palumbo the background for this series, but allowed him to dig deep into the psyche of the characters giving them a greater depth than most authors are able to provide.

Daniel Rinaldi comes across as a strong character, but with some flaws that allow him to get drawn into situations most of the rest of us would avoid. At times it seems he takes chances that suspend belief, but they add to the depth and suspense of the mystery. The author neatly ties together the bank robbery and Sinclair's quest for the position of governor.

Fever Dream is a non-stop series of events that will have readers rapidly turning pages.

I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Dr. Daniel Rinaldi in his debut novel Mirror Image and I'm thrilled to renew the acquaintance in Fever Dream, the second in the series. And let me say right off that I think this second in the series is light years ahead of the first. Palumbo literally grips you from the opening pages and does not let up until the satisfying climax. He does what I expect from this genre--Palumbo mixes interesting, offbeat characters who eventually all fit together into the larger picture as we unravel a puzzling mystery. I think one of Palumbo's strengths is plot and how he can spin us off into different directions and still have the pieces fit together. He knows how to end a chapter with enough of a hook to keep you reading

I won't rehash the plot since others are referring to it. But the bank robbery premise and the unfolding political scandal both seem grounded in reality. Rinaldi makes for the perfect protagonist, a flawed human being, trying to do the right thing, surrounded by interesting supporting characters including Polk and Lowrey. His boxing background makes the action scenes plausible. The city of Pittsburgh becomes a supporting character and Palumbo certainly knows his way around the back streets and corridors of power.

Palumbo breathes new life into the genre while keeping alive the spirit of the shining knight who goes off to do battle against the Powers That Be, much like Raymond Chandler. I look forward to further adventures of Daniel Rinaldi and urge all my fellow mystery lovers to purchase this book.

With Dennis Palumbo's first Rinaldi mystery/thriller "Mirror Image" I knew that here was a writer to fit in with the likes of Michael Connelly, Jonathan Kellerman, and Robert Crais. The second in the Rinaldi series is "Fever Dream", and like a magician Palumbo lays out all the puzzle pieces in plain view but manages to surprise you at the end without cheating along the way.

The characters in these books really come alive. The protagonist, Daniel Rinaldi, is imperfect in a lovable way. He cares about all people, not just his therapy patients, and when his life is on the line he is fearful but does what needs to be done. Rinaldi is primarily a psychologist, but from time to time he works with the police to help solve particularly vexing crimes. Save for one detective, Rinaldi is usually disrespected by the force for being an "outsider" yet those who work closely with him respect his ability to connect the dots and understand the way the perps think. Their respect is usually dealt out as backhanded compliments.

Rinaldi's willingness to cross the line between psych and sleuth gets him into trouble with the force but he does whatever needs to be done to help solve the crime. As a former boxer Rinaldi is rarely intimidated by anyone, but his bravado sometimes leads to life and death circumstances.

This is an exciting series of books with characters who pop from the page and stay with you after you've finished the book. I'd recommend it for any mystery/thriller fans. You won't be disappointed.

Format: Paperback
In the beginning, we had Alex Delaware, psychologist and sometime police consultant. Now we also have Daniel Rinaldi, psychotherapist and part-time police consultant. There, of course, the similarities end. Whereas the Kellerman protagonist is more cerebral, the Palumbo creation is more physical, in keeping with his background as a Golden Glover from the mean streets of Pittsburgh.

This novel, the second in which Rinaldi is involved in a murder mystery which endangers his life (multiple times), begins when he is called by a Pittsburgh detective following a bank robbery, to treat the sole surviving hostage (all the others were shot). From that point, a series of events takes place, fast and furious. In the midst of everything, there is a gubernatorial campaign in which the D.A. is running as a tough law-and-order candidate, complicating the police efforts and raising other concerns.

The complex plot proceeds apace, with scant clues but much physical action, especially a few murders and lots of firepower. The only criticism I have about an otherwise entertaining novel is Rinaldi's omnipotence, allowing him to merely espouse solutions to the various mysteries without any preceding facts in the narrative (maybe that's the way motion picture scripts are written - - the author formerly was a Hollywood screenwriter). Nevertheless, the book is very enjoyable, and is recommended.
