very enjoyable sleeper,
This review is from: Mirror Mirror [VHS] (VHS Tape)
MIRROR MIRROR is a rip off of every teen angst movie you've ever seen, mostly CARRIE & THE FURY, and it's all the more enjoyable for it. Director Sargenti offers up this fluff horror piece about a shy "goth" girl named Megan (Rainbow Harvest) who moves to a new school filled with your expected bitchy cheerleaders and obnoxious jocks. The class sweetheart Nikki (Kristen Datillo) makes "nice" with Megan and tries to help her join the popularity club, but it backfires repeatedly. Lucky for Megan, and no one else, she finds a magic mirror which empowers her with the ability to create "Fury" on her enemies through nose bleeds, burnings, drowings, and the ability to project demons in the form of her classmates to carry on murderous deeds. The film moves quickly, has an authentically eerie look thanks to the cast and settings always being dressed in shades of blue & green, and offers of some good suspense. And then there's the cast to die for: Yvonne DeCarlo, Karen Black, Ricky Paull Golden, William Sanderson, Charlie Spradling... and more. For a fun time with fluffy scares and some decent monster make up, check it out... but skip the lame sequels.

This is a low budget but very well done horror movie about a demonic mirror. It has great music and a real sense of atmosphere. The director does great work with slow motion and interesting use of sound effects. The well-written smart script also has some nice deadpan humour: you have to see Charleen's school president campaign ad to believe it. The look of the film is creepy, the school bullies Kim and Charleen are horribly nasty (as well as the best characters in the film) and the ending is just WOW. I was sorry to see this film end.

'Mirror Mirror' is one of those Horror films I've always loved over the years but have easily forgotten about. Its also a flick that I have to be in a certain mood to watch. Maybe for a nostalgic reason. More to remind myself that are are great 90's Horror films in a time when most considered Horror not so good. 'Mirror Mirror', its original but not so original if that makes any sense (haha). When comparing, as an example, lets just say off the top of my head, it reminded me of that well-respected flick, 'Christine', but instead of a possessed car, we have a possessed mirror. Unlike 'Christine', the mirror not only possesses a person but gives he/she deadly powers as seen in other Horror films such as 'Carrie'.
I'm aware that Mirror Mirror has many sequels but have never bothered to seek them out because I've always felt that this is a story that isn't suppose to have sequels (in my opinion). I've actually felt that way about many titles but that's another topic. 'Mirror Mirror' is perfect all by itself and doesn't need further chapters. I think it's neat to actually see the demon within the mirror! For its time, I feel it still holds up on the creep factor and will always keep its strange vibe. It's a simple little horror that's not loaded with over-the-top gore. Don't get me wrong, there are some splatter scenes that impressed me and those scenes are spaced throughout this film making it easy/fun to watch. Overall, I think the acting, special effects, and pacing is great. I feel its a four-star rating but I give it that fifth star simply for nostalgia. Check it out; it's not a bad Horror film at all.

Really fun and underrated horror film.,

Mirror Mirror isn't really well known among horror fans but I thought it was a great and very underrated low budget horror film, it was very atmospheric and seemed typical of the late 80's horror films with the cheesy synthesizer music, which is not bad at all since I really love those type of films. The movie starts out back in the 30's. A young woman appears to have murdered her friend with an ominous looking mirror in the background. Now, skip to present day (1990), Megan and her mother have just moved into the same house in which that murder took place. The same ominous mirror is still in the house and instead of disposing of it, Megan has grown a liking to it. Now, Megan is a teenager and dresses like a goth kid so naturally she is tormented in the new school she is going to. But, she discovers that this mirror is giving her powers and her tolerance for the kids at school is wearing thin.
I know this description of the movie sounds a bit cheesy but you have to watch the movie to really catch the atmosphere. The camera angling is absolutely wonderful, the score is brilliant, the acting is okay (except Karen Black who is always welcome) and the special effects were O.K. considering that the film had a low budget and this movies strong point was its atmosphere. And the ending is quite original too. Some of the gore scene were nice and this film was definitely worth watching as I liked it alot. Best scene probably was the one where one of the girls in Megan's school gets her skin burned to death by the steam pipes in the shower. Mirror Mirror was definitely a surprise for me. I went in not expecting much, but I came out feeling satisfied at what turns out to be a fun little horror movie that definitely has some originality. The whole concept of the mirror making these wishes and thoughts a reality, only to gain more control over Megan, works quite effectively and is an original idea in itself. Sure, the whole idea of seeking revenge on those who have wronged you has been done over a million times, but Mirror Mirror is unique in its implementation. And of course, seeing the gruesome results to some of Megan's thoughts is sure to please most horror fans. I also enjoyed Megan's decent into this power hungry avenger, only to realize too late that she's been used by the mirror and that its not always going to do what she wants. Definitely an enjoyable movie, one that most horror fans will appreciate.

Mirror Mirror on the wall...who's the deadliest of them all!,

This is a story about a possessed mirror, and the power i weilds over a young, low esteemed girl, and it's dealy consequences.
Rainbow Harvest is the girl, a sort of Winona Ryder type actress. She plays the part very well. The late Yvonne DeCarlo also stars as an estate seller who tries to help twart the cursed mirror. This was also one of Ricki Paul Goldin's early movies. As usual, he was pretty good as the silly boyfiend of Nikki, the heroine. And playing the part of Rainbow's Mom is the late Karen Black, queen of the B- Movies. Pretty standard story, but it is directed well and moves along at a fast pace. Worth the money because it does what it should : entertains.

you will enjoy this movie. A true "B" movie of the 80's but it's fun watching Rainbow Harvest's payback to the "Big Shots" of those infamous high school days. Like I said just a fun little flick to watch. So buy it and enjoy!!!!

Middling fare, but certainly not unenjoyable.,

A social teen outcast (played by Winona Ryder look-a-like Rainbow Harvest) discovers a mirror in her room that gives her special powers, which she proceeds to use violently on her taunting classmates. This supernatural horror/thriller takes way too long to really get going, but is pretty entertaining for the last forty or so minutes. Despite a few very silly moments and a baffling ending, there's enough blood, suspense, and nudity to satisfy horror fans looking for a quick fix.** 1/2 out of *****

Awesome flick and Rainbow Harvest is a babe,

This is another one of those movies where the lesson learned is don't make fun of the different. Rainbow Harvest plays Megan, a goth-type girl from LA. Her new schoolmates tease and torment her, but she befriends a girl named Nikki.
In Megan's new house is a mirror which gives her powers. What she doesn't know is that the demon inside begins to control her and that's when the real trouble starts. Megan has fun at first by having the mirror kill a would-be boyfriend, a big boobed class president, and the nosy antique lady. But when she loses control and attacks Nikki and drowns her boyfriend, things go downhill for Megan from there. The ending is a bit strange because Nikki goes back in time to the become the original owner of the mirror, a witch who killed her sister. Now she is back in that age and sees that she has stabbed Megan in the same way. A few laughs, a few frights, some good bloody scenes, and even a MILF. What more could you want on a Saturday night at three in the morning?
