Book Description

Critically acclaimed memoir of award-winning author and poet, Ann Carbine Best, IN THE MIRROR: A MEMOIR OF SHATTERED SECRETS has been an Amazon Bestseller since its release in 2011.

When Ann Carbine marries Larry Best in the Salt Lake temple in 1961, she's certain their marriage will last forever. Eleven years later, she learns that he's been having affairs with men. Devastated by the revelation, Ann feels betrayed and abandoned. She still loves Larry and wants to save their marriage. However, powerful emotions pull Larry away from his family, just as AIDS is beginning its relentless march through the gay community. As a single parent, Ann is faced with four grieving children who don't want to leave their father and their home in Utah. But Ann needs to start a new life in a new place. In the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, she at last makes peace with the past.

"A frank and engaging memoir, one in which the author, with a gift for understatement and quiet but powerful prose, recalls her dramatic life with an in-your-face honesty that gut-punches the reader." ~Steve Walker, author of The Power of Tolkien's Prose and Seven Ways of Looking at Susanna.

"This skillfully written page -turner. . . is a courageous memoir of loss and pain. . . ." ~Maureen Derrick Keeler, Professor of English & Literature.

"Ann Best portrays herself, and those who share her journey, with unflinching honesty. Her paucity of description and her generous use of dialogue keeps the story moving. , , , a must-read for anyone who thinks they cannot handle what life offers." ~Diane Marcou, author of The Smuggler's Ghost

"This moving, inspiring, and candid memoir is a simply told yet eloquent story of a woman whose mortal journey takes her through a series of life-shattering crises, each of which could break any one of us." ~Richard H. Cracroft, author, editor and Chair, BYU English Department

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gripping Story of Survival June 12, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
It's been awhile since I've read a memoir as gripping as 'In the Mirror'. Written in a clear, forthright style, Ann Best's life story unfolds in a seamless manner, avoiding the mundane and tangents some non-fiction falls prey to. Dealing with not only her husband's homosexual affairs but also a tragic car accident and her second husband's alcoholism, one would expect a certain amount of self-pity to be present. But, in fact, it's nowhere to be seen. Instead, Ann gives us insight into a strong, brave woman who has coped and persevered -- and overcome.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful and powerful memoir July 16, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
As a young bride in 1961, Ann is blissfully married to Larry and looks forward to the comfort of her cloistered religion, the promise of a family and the beginnings of a life as a wife of an up and coming academic. However, after Ann's life is turned on its head when Larry declares his homosexuality, moves out and lives with his lover, Cliff. Later her daughters, Jen and Megan are involved in a horrific car accident, leaving Jen near death and paralysed.

In less able hands, such a life could easily be turned into something sordid and self-pitying. Not so in Ann's skilful poetic and powerful prose. She relates the story of her journey from young bride, divorcee and single working mother through to a second tragic marriage and ultimate realisation to look after her, herself, with quiet pared down eloquent language, peppered with natural dialogue and emotional restraint - sometimes too much restraint. When she opens her heart and prose fully - as she does with her passionate but unconsummated love affair with Howard Smith - the writing soars from already great heights to the sublime. For most of the memoir, Ann allows the cathartic events unfolding her life and the people involved to take central stage. Ultimately it is a memoir of how a 4 feet 11 inch "little mom" found the emotional and physical strength of ten giants to tackle and survive many shattered secrets.

2.0 out of 5 stars cared about the author but not the book December 18, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Ann speaks from the heart about her Mormon beliefs, gay first husband, alcoholic 2nd husband and the challenges of raising children. I was engaged in the first part of the book, especially with her confusing feelings for her boss. However the reading became quite tedious as I continued and I basically skimmed quickly through the 2nd half to read what happened. I also didn't understand why there were so few details and emotions related to several serious problems encountered by her children, including how they changed Ann's world.

More About the Author

In May of 2011, just a few days after my 71st birthday, WiDo Publishing Company published my first memoir, In the Mirror: A Memoir of Shattered Secrets, the story of my journey with a homosexual husband, the father of my children, and with an alcoholic husband, both deceased; and with a brain-injured daughter, Jen, who can't walk. I've been her full-time caregiver for over twenty-five years. I have four children and eight grandchildren. I grew up in Salt City, Utah but have settled in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Over the years I've taught literature at the college level, been a proofreader, tutor, and editor, and have published and won awards for stories, poems, and essays.
