Love this book for letting one see how women artist's view themselves. Just recently did two self portraits in a colllege painting class and saw how difficult it is to paint oneself objectively and not bring all your doubts and conflicts into the portrait. Fascinating process and this is a book that allows you to enter other people's views of themselves using their chosen medium.

I don't know why the other reviewers were so generous in their reviews of this book. The format is small and the artwork that is represented isn't anything to write home about. I was disappointed in the level of the artists represented in this book, I think their are several female artists that are more talented than those that they chose for this important publication.

Anyone who is interested in art knows that women who painted have been given short shrift through the centuries. This anthology of relatively unknown but highly innovative and brave women illuminates their contributions and talents. Personally, I dislike the idea that there has to be a separate museum of paintings by women in order to garner attention, but this collection softens the blow.
