While staying in a Roman residence for traveling priests after his conversion to Catholicism, Benson wrote this both whimsical and blood-curdling series of ghost stories. Each has a lesson, but the reader only notes that on a second reading! The first effect is pure horror! Benson insinuates himself into each character, from the dry English priest to the excitable French one who describes an exorcism in the West Indies. They are full-blown personalities, each drawn into sharing a peculiar, life-changing experience ... with others who can be expected to understand.
