Product Description

MirrorTap is Proudly Designed and Manufactured in the USA by J28 Design, Inc., makers of BlendMount and MirrorTap product Lines. MirrorTap Fits radar detectors with RJ11 male jack. MirrorTap is Available from 9" to 36" overall Length. MirrorTap is Available in NANO .040" Tap Width, MICRO .050" Tap Width, or REGULAR .080" Tap Width. No More coiled cigarette lighter power cords. The MirrorTap Power Cord simply plugs into any wire harness close to your AUTO DIMMING MIRROR, whether it be exposed on the rear face of the mirror or concealed above the mirror. No cutting or splicing wires, and No messin with the Air Bags inside your A-pillar as is done with regular hardwire installations to the fuse box under the Dash. Guidelines on Using a Voltmeter to Locate Power and Ground: (#1) First set your voltmeter to the continuity setting (should beep when you touch the red and black probes together, telling you they are shorted) (#2) Find a ground on the car somewhere, like a bolt under the dash, or a metal cross member. (#3) Put the black probe on that ground, and touch the back of each exposed wire connector in the mirror harness with the red probe. (#4) For each wire that beeps, that means that wire is grounded. Turn the ignition to the on position, then back to off, and make sure it beeps regardless of ignition position. (#5) Put the voltmeter into VDC mode, to measure DC volts, turn the ignition to the on position. (#6) Put the black probe on the ground wire found in #4. (#7) Touch each of the wires in that harness with the red probe, and note which one(s) gives you +12-14 volts, turn the ignition off to verify that the volt readings go down to zero or close to zero. (Finally) That should define which two ports in that harness into which you would plug the MirrorTap, the black Prong into #4 above, and the Red to #7.

The MirrorTap is a high quality product that cleans up the installation of your radar detector. While it might be a little expensive and some can make their own using low-cost products from electronics stores, I was interested in something that looked like it could have been factory installed, not homemade. I am also not experienced in these activities, and figured the amount of time I would spend learning, shopping, and creating would cost many times more than the MirrorTap.

Installation was easy, with one small snag. I had to file down the connectors in order to fully insert them into my mirror's harness (and this is why I rated the product four stars instead of five). I am also using a BlendMount and these two products together free my windshield of craptacular suction cups, free my dash from bulky cords that get in the way of controls, and have a clean, professional look and feel.

I installed this in my 2012 Ford Edge SEL. My radar detector is mounted below the rear-view mirror with an attachment device from BlendMount. The instructions said I could squeeze the MirrorTap connectors into the back of the "mirror plug" in order to direct wire my radar detector. Well, the answer is yes and no. The ground wire on the plug is 22 gauge. This is small enough that the MirrorTap connector slipped right in. However, the 12 v wire on the plug is 20 gauge. There simply is not enough room to slip in the MirrorTap connector here. So, what I did was remove a very small part of the insulation from the 12 v wire next to the back of the plug. Then I used a crimp squeeze connection to attach the MirrorTap connector to the 12 v hot wire. Then I covered it with some flexible black wire harness material. Made a nice tidy installation. It works and I'm happy.

I really like my BlendMount and while it is pricey for what it is it is the best mirror mount available at this time.
However when it comes to this cord it is so overpriced it is ridiculous. Near identical item is available on a very popular auction site for less than $10. While I give credit for the quality of the mount there is no way the cord is worth 3x the price of other brands.

We had purchased the custom blendmount holder last year and we love it so we decided to add the mirror tap for convenience we took our vehicle to a custom auto shop an hour away to have it installed as the local Nissan dealer and several auto audio shops did not want to touch it, well worth the trip! cost was $35 to install the mirrortap and they said it only took the guy 10min. Much more convenient than having the coil cord hanging down in the way.

Once installed, this product works perfectly. That said, the instructions to visit a Stereo store didn't work for me. I'm sure the stereo guy knows how to install a stereo, but he mis-ID'd the power and ground on the rear-view mirror. I went to the local Ford Dealer and asked for the power schematic, which they were happy to provide. No guesswork, no errors.

The idea behind this is that you wedge the pins into the mirror plug which then provides power. The instructions say not to use excessive force when inserting the pins, but the reality is that the only way the pins will fit into the plug is if you DO apply force. I managed to get 1 of the pins in, but the second would not fit on any side of the wire. The wires are held in the connector by tension, and in some cases there is just not enough room to get the pin in. On the side that did seem to have the most room, when I pushed the pin enough to move, it ended up popping the front of the connector off and breaking the pin. I'm irritated that I spend thirty dollars on short piece of wire that I now have to solder to a much longer piece of wire and run under the dash. I have experience with both home and electronic wiring, and this does not seem like a good design. I recommend avoiding this and purchasing a direct wire kit which is going to be more reliable and less likely to damage your car.

I have the 9500ix mounted underneath the rear view mirror of my 2009 Acura TSX and I got tired of the coiled power cord dangling in my face as I'm driving.

So I did some research and tried to find other ways to power my 9500ix that will give it that clean "factory installed" look. It was either between this or the Direct Wire Power Cord by Escort. Although the Direct Wire is much cheaper, the MirrorTap power cord looked much easier to install to me. So I was willing to pay more for the simple installation, and plus I was digging that braided sleeve around the cord. :)

Once I put in the order, I received an email from BlendMount and they asked me the following two questions:

(1) What vehicle Year/Make/Model will you install this in?
(2) Is your AUTO DIMMING mirror's wire harness EXPOSED on its rear face, or CONCEALED elsewhere?

After I provided my information, I received my MirrorTap power cord in the mail in two days.

Installation was very quick and easy. It only took me a couple of minutes to finish. The manual recommends to use a voltmeter to identify the ground wire and the +12 volt switched wire of the mirror's wire harness, but since I already read bunch of reviews beforehand on the installation for Acura TSX rear view mirrors, I didn't bother using a voltmeter and just started plugging away.

So all I did was:

1) Unplugged the wire harness from my rear view mirror.
2) Wedged in the red prong of the MirrorTap cord into the +12V switched wire of my mirror's wire harness (which for my case was the very first rectangular port)
3) Wedged in the black prong into the ground wire of my mirror's wire harness (which is second rectangular port in my case).
