I really like Peter Gabriel, and was pleased to see this tune being offered up as the "Free Song of the Day" on May 22, 2010. The song is from Gabriel's new album "Scratch My Back", on which he covers songs by other bands. The follow-up album, "I'll Scratch Yours", is supposed to have other bands playing Peter Gabriel songs.

This song is originally by the UK band Elbow. You can listen to the original on YouTube -- it is a nice song driven by piano and guitar with some violin overdubs. Gabriel has turned it into a mellow, semi-orchestral tune, taken out the strong drum backbeat, and has inserted a synthesizer run or two in the style of Philip Glass.

I really enjoyed the song and it made me think very seriously about buying the album. But this is not Peter Gabriel the rockstar, à la "Sledgehammer". This is in the tradition of quiet, contemplative Peter Gabriel. I didn't find it to be a major departure from his past work stylistically, except in terms of instrumentation. Very nice, recommended!

There is no question that Peter Gabriel has been absent from the music scene for a longtime. Nevertheless, he wanted to focus on his solo work, and not even share a moment of joy as he & his former bandmates of Genesis were inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame earlier this year. Yet his latest single Mirrorball from his latest album Scratch My Back, tries to bring in a orchestral sound with what has made Peter a strong singer from his early days. While he hasn't been able to try to reignite the sparks, although he was up last year for a Oscar for his composing with the Disney film Wall-E, he still needs some work. His latest Mirrorball from Scratch My Back brings in more of a orchestral sound to his song-styled voice. Yet while the orchestration is good, Peter though doesn't feel like he gets out the intimacy and mood-shattering he was going for. Hopefully, Peter can conquer that with his next single from Scratch My Back, and we'll try to scratch his back if he scratches ours first.

I love Peter Gabriel and want to like this album. I don't. It is not "bad", but it's not his best work. I won't delete it from my library, but I don't think I've listened to it since it came out either.
