4.0 out of 5 stars seeing the movie not a requirement...
...but it DOES help, unless you like unusual music. without being "experimental," the music on this disc pushes some boundaries - mainly in the "quirky" field, but is overall very accessable. it also covers a lot of ground, at times sounding like eric serra, and others like django reinhardt playing with don byron. while trying to describe it to a friend who hadn't seen...

2.0 out of 5 stars ODD
I loved the movie! The CD, Hmmmmmmmmmm, still trying to get it to grow on me. "Close to You" and the last song are awesome.

A fantastic movie with an equally wonderful score. From the opening circus-y feel to the jazz vibe through out is quite different and appealing from the usually movie score fare. The highlight is the remake of the Carpenters "Close to You". Very odd and Beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars enchanting, December 22, 2005
This review is from: Mirrormask (Audio CD)
For those that like their music beautifully bizarre. This soundtrack is comprised mostly of circus music and jazz! One of my personal favorites is Mrs. Bagwell's Rhumba, it's entertaining and catchy! This soundtrack may also be used as background music to get your creative juices flowing. Personally, I listen to it as I paint or draw, and interesting results follow. It's also nice to relax to. See what it can do for you! =^^= And if you haven't, be sure also to see the superb movie it accompanied! o(^^)9

5.0 out of 5 stars great collection of unusual music, May 6, 2007

Rented the movie on reccomendation from Netflix, it was pretty good. But the music was the star of the show. The soundtrack follows the course of the movie pretty closely, it's kind of like listening to the movie. Each track brings to mind a specific scene in the movie. One of the highlights is the ecclectic treatment of Burt Bacharach's "Close to You". Most will remember the super-sweet Carpenter's version, but this interpretation was the main reason I bought the music. Unusual augmented chord progressions and almost minimalist format (complete with the mechanical background sounds made by the female jack-in-the-box-like, life-sized, mostly metal toy dressers) make the tune as captivating as in the movie when they 'convert' the trapped Helena into the black princess. Great music to play while relaxing, too.

this is a very unique and complex collection of music. it's very hard to sum up in a pithy phrase or two. it's quirky, eclectic, humorous, and never grows tiresome. you can listen to it over and over and continue to be astonished by its sublime, hypnotic, extroardinarily beautiful passages.
iain ballamy is a gifted young man with a bright future ahead of him. i will keep my eye out for his work in the years ahead and you should too.
in the meantime do yourself a favor and pick this collection up. you will not regret it.

If you have the movie, you must... must... did I mention must(?) have the soundtrack. It is a beautiful work by Ian Bellamy. There is a lovely booklet included. I listen to it in the shower, in my ipod when I'm driving, any time I want to relax or even while I'm cooking. It's pretty long and if this is one of your favorite movies, like it is mine, the music is so specific that the entire story is retold without the visuals. This is one of the best collections I have purchased.

I love the soundtrack from this movie. If you like the movie at all...and/or if you enjoy other films from jim henson you will thoroughly enjoy this soundtrack! Relaxing and beautiful...then suspensful and playful at times. Great combination! A+

The movie was awsome. I just got one or two of the songs stuck in my head, so I had to get the soundtrack.

I love to listen to this soundtrack as I work on my art. The MirrorMask movie is one of my favorite and having the beautiful music on a CD is awesome. It is has a wonderful jazz sound that has a calming and eerie mood to it. I love it so much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music to haunt your daydreams, May 2, 2010
This review is from: Mirrormask (Audio CD)
Quirky, frenetic, and lovely, full of unique melodies and possibly a lot less freaky if you don't already associate it with evil cats sporting human faces. You don't have to have a particular remote sense of humor to appreciate Iain Ballamy's creative and unforgettable score. My husband gave me the CD along with the movie for Valentine's two years ago, and my copies of both are well worn. Did I mention that the music helps greatly with the illusion that housework can have an element of the fantastical? Stunning in every way.
