Editorial Reviews

Mirrors The Sky is the debut album by 25-year-old London songwriter Lyla Foy. Lyla started as a solo artist in 2012 under the name WALL, garnering acclaim from Black Cab Sessions, BBC Radio (Steve Lamacq declared "Magazine" his favorite song of the year), and Pitchfork (who praised Lyla's haunting cover of Karen Dalton's "Something on Your Mind," and spotlighted 2013's Shoestring EP). Lyla Foy's hypnotically hushed songs have come quite a long way over the past two years, and her worldwide deal with Sub Pop will find her spending quality time supporting Mirrors the Sky around the globe.

When the DJ played a cut, she predicted we'll be hearing a lot more of Lyla Foy following this compelling solo debut under her own name. After listening to just one song, I went out and got the CD (same as with Lana Del Rey). Comparisons to other artists don't do justice, but think along the lines of Tanya Donelly, Tori Amos, Cocteau Twins, Marissa Nadler, and even Cyndi Lauper, The lyrics are nothing special (there's room to grow in that respect), but they're heartfelt enough to suggest a story, even if she's not going to be too overt about it. The lyrics are simply sound bubbles that carry the music and evoke moods of wistfulness and desire, with understated hooks. Quite lovely.

I tend to be stuck in the past when it comes to music. I grew up in the 80s and 90s. Most of the music I listen to is from that time or from bands from that time that are still at it today. I don't hear much new music but when I do I usually don't like it. That is not the case with Lyla Foy. I love this CD. Get it, you'll love it.
