4.0 out of 5 stars Average In Flames - above average in general, March 18, 2008
This review is from: Mirror's Truth (Audio CD)
This is the single for their upcoming album A Sense of Purpose. If I had to compare the songs here with those from any other In Flames album it'd be Soundtrack to Your Escape.

The Mirror's Truth - Short, simple and infectious. Fits into a familiar song structure that In Flames has utilized much in the past. Decent riffs and catchy chorus. Pretty average for recent In Flames.

Eraser - A bit better. Excellent drumming on this track and an interesting chorus with a cool background melody. Still a bit formulaic.

Tilt - The Highlight of the release for me. Excellent, infectious riffs and an enjoyable solo are the highlights.

Abnegation - Different than the previous release of this song, most noticeably in the chorus in which the sing-along clean vocals have been replaced by Anders' harsh vocals with a clean-sung layer added underneath. The lyrics are a bit different as well. Pretty good track.

While I can't complain, as I enjoyed all of the songs, I am a bit disappointed. It's a bit softer than Come Clarity (which I greatly enjoy and consider to be one of their best) and the sound is a bit over processed, as well. If you didn't like Soundtrack (I enjoyed it, but consider it their worst album) you probably won't like this, either. Personally, even though I'm not blown away, I'll still be listening to, and enjoying, these songs continuously for days, I'm sure. I've enjoyed everything In Flames has ever done, and if you're the same then you'll probably enjoy this as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars In Flames come out stong again, March 29, 2008

This review is from: Mirror's Truth (Audio CD)
When I first heard 'The Mirror's Truth', I was a little suprised by the vocals. I could tell it was Anders' voice, but it was different. After listening a few more times, the change quickly became very welcome to my ears. I really enjoy the way he sounds, and I especially like the way the rest of the band plays on this EP and what I've heard of A Sense of Purpose so far.

The Mirror's Truth-A pretty fast paced song. The vocals are fresh and new while still recognizibly Anders. There is a quick solo by Bjorn which is good to hear. The chorus is pretty catchy. 5/5

Eraser-This song almost sounds like it could be on the older albums. Its fast throughout, and has very little of Anders' clean vocals. There are even a few growls thrown in which are awesome. The solo on this song is much better than that on The Mirror's Truth. Its their best solo in years in my opinion. 5/5

Tilt-A mezmorizing riff keeps this song going throughout. When I first heard the beginning of this track, I knew it was gold. I really like the lyrics too, sort of a slap in the face to all the people who talk trash about In Flames. "You're waiting for a re-run, but yesterday won't come!"
5/5

Abnegation-This new version of an already great song is better than the original in my opinion. The vocals are stronger, they go with the rest of the EP. Some lyrics were tweaked slightly in the chorus. Also, the chorus sounds much better with Anders new style of vocals. 5/5

I am a huge In Flames fan, so I had high hopes for this EP. It went beyond my hopes and really suprised me. Now I am even more eagerly awaiting their full album.

This vinyl is both amazing visually and audibly. From one of my favorite albums of all time. Definitely suggested for IF collectors.
