5.0 out of 5 stars An early look at the famous May 8, 2010
Format:Paperback
This book is frequently mentioned in bibliographies you find in photo history titles and though it was published in 1978 I always thought this was a wonderful overview of photography from the preceding two decades. In the first twenty-five pages Szarkowski writes in his usual succinct style about the changes in photography from the sixties: color, almost but not quite ready to burst on the scene; the disappearance of the weekly and monthly magazines that relied heavily on photos (Life, Look, Coronet etc) the development of the very personal vision from young photographers (many who are now well known) and the importance of Frank's The Americans and Minor White's Aperture magazine.

The rest of the pages carry 127 photos (fourteen in color) from eighty-four photographers and I think it is a very comprehensive collection, including several semi-abstract works (John Mott-Smith, Ray Metzker or Robert Heinecken for example).

The landscape format works well, captions are on each page and the 200 screen printing is fine. Best of all you can pick up copies of the hardback or paperback quite cheaply. Well worth getting.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointment September 30, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This boook had been recommended to me by a professional photographer from whom I was taking a creative photography class. Obvioiusly, I was eagerly anticipating its arrival. Imagine my surprise when I opened the package and found that almost half of the book, including the cover, was missing. I immediately returned the book, hoping to exchange it for an in tact version, and was told that I could not do that. I forget the reason but it was disappointing.

The question I have is, "How could anyone send out half a book?"
