4.0 out of 5 stars truly original australian sci-fi, February 16, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Mirrorsun Rising (Paperback)
When I was in Australia a few years ago, I bought the first book of the Greatwinter series. It was one of the best sci-fi books I've read. The characters are wonderfully complex and they exist in a future Australia that is original and exciting. When I got to the end and discovered that it was only one of a series, I started a long search for the second book, Mirrorsun Rising.

It took a long time, but it was worth the wait. Despite my plan to make it last, I read it through in one day, but definitely plan to reread it before sending it back through the interlibrary loan system. If you like sci-fi that doesn't require people to have learned the secrets of interstellar travel, this series is for you. I never felt cheated by having the action confined to terra firma.

I highly recommend trying to find this series. It's well worth the trouble.

I understand the story in Mirrorsun Rising was assimilated into McMullen's enjoyable Souls in the Great Machine. An annoying defect of SitGM was the absence of a map. While searching for one I found this bibliographic reference stating that Mirrorsun Rising contains a map:

Can any reviewer confirm that Mirrorsun Rising has a map ?
Better yet, could someone post an image of that map ?

4.0 out of 5 stars Australian SF Reader, July 31, 2007
This review is from: Mirrorsun Rising (Paperback)
In this part of the Greatwinter saga, it is a case of duelling Calculors. With the Mirror Sun a rather deadly threat the Highliber and the Abbess have to work out what to do about it, as well as win a war on the ground.

Not the easiest of tasks, by any means, and the will certainly need help from some skilled agents on the ground.
