Editorial Reviews

2012 release from the Dubstep sensation. Singer, songwriter and newly self-taught producer Jamie Woon made his name by playing live. He's got hundreds and hundreds of gigs under his belt, from endless spots in front of the microphone with just his guitar, an effects box and that unmistakable voice to supporting Amy Winehouse. You might say it's in his blood: his mother is Scottish folk legend Mae McKenna, a lady who did session vocals for a massive list of stars including Bjork, Michael Jackson and most of the `80s popettes who passed through Stock, Aitken and Waterman's London studios. With Mirrorwriting, his Verve debut, Jamie has come into his own as one of the most brilliant singers and songwriters on the scene today. With production from Burial, it announces the arrival of an artist with peerless soul, talent and promise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth It. May 27, 2011
By kgr
Format:Audio CD
As the first reviewer noted, not having a U.S. release has resulted in a pretty jacked priced for the disk. I got mine locally in New York City for $25.

Was it worth it? In a word, Yes!! Think of the dark, brooding beats in Burial:Untrue, softened, and positioned behind a more lively layer, which is complemented with a fresh voice and cool lyrics. In some quick searching, I have learned that Woon and William Bevan (Burial) have collaborated on at least two remixes, and in my opinion, that influence is clear in this disk. I am just a day or two in on listening, but I can say with confidence that track 4, "Shoulda" is a masterpiece. I am holding my fifth start to see if the disk survives the test of time.

When I listen to Burial (Untrue) it is usually late at night, with the lights out and "one last scotch" in hand. For me, this is perfect for contemplating its beauty and its haunting sadness. Woon's Mirrorwriting has some similar qualities, but is broader and much lighter in emotion, increasing the range of its appeal. It is also important to note that this is a vocalist cd; Woon sings on every track. If you are into only pure electronica, you will probably not like it, because the electronica and the "dub" is often in the background, not the central element of each song.

I hope this is helpful! Peace. rk
