HE WAS SLIGHTLY MORE THAN WONDERFUL, February 22, 2010
This review is from: Misbehavin Badly (Audio CD)
The concept behind this compilation is that all of the tracks were either intended for, or actually issued as V-Discs (that is, wartime 78s issued to entertain American forces fighting in WW2). It kicks off with two of the sides Fats cut with his Buddies in 1929, followed by four numbers recorded with his Rhythm between 1936 and 1941 (with a further 1941 recording to finish). At this point there's a song from the soundtrack of the 20th Century Fox film "Stormy Weather". The remaining 13 tracks were recorded in September 1943, and feature Fats playing piano and organ solos and singing in his own inimitable style. This was his final session, and he comes over as gloriously uninhibited, and frequently hilarious! Sound quality is excellent, and this should be an integral part of any Fats Waller collection.
