Thomas Schafer, professor emeritus of church history at McCormick Theological Seminary, has devoted his career to studying Jonathan Edwards, the brilliant 18th- century preacher and theologian who led the Great Awakening. As a young scholar in 1945, Schafer began reading Edwards' manuscript collection of "Miscellanies," and "became convinced that that notebook series was indispensable to all future Edwards scholarship." For the past fifty years he has guided scholars through the complexities of Edwards' theology while immersing himself in study of the manuscripts. This volume, which reprints many of the Miscellanies for the first time, represents the culmination of his work. Edwards was a prolific writer who left a huge body of manuscripts at his death. Besides a diary, sermons, and notebooks on discrete topics such as the Trinity, he wrote nine volumes of Miscellanies which record his theological reflections. Schafer reprints all of the entries written between 1722 and 1731 as well as the "Table" that Edwards prepared as an index. The rest of the Miscellanies (more than 1,400 entries) will be published in later volumes.
