Book Description

3 and upP and upFlashpoint Press

Old Mrs. Johnson lives alone in the forest and loves to knit sweaters and mittens for her grandchildren in the city. One day, when returning from a visit to the city, her solitude comes to an end when her mischievous forest neighbors reveal themselves in a delightfully colorful fashion—someone took her yarn. The colorful mystery is solved when the birds, rabbits, snakes, trees, and other dwellers of Mrs. Johnson's neighborhood are seen playing with the yarn. Suddenly the forest doesn't seem so lonely, and the visiting grandkids take great delight getting to know its inhabitants. This picture book is a lesson for both young and old to connect with one's surroundings and embrace the role of good neighbors with the rest of the natural world, whether in the city or in the forest.

5.0 out of 5 stars sweet way to influence little minds, November 9, 2010
This review is from: Mischief in the Forest: A Yarn Yarn (Flashpoint Press) (Hardcover)
A sweetly seditious, wonderfully illustrated tale for all my little relatives and friends! I know from experience this kind of art is the kind that kids like, and they don't mind a teaching tale if it is in the context of a good story like this one (they just hate outright propaganda or moralistic preaching inherent, alas, in so many kids' books where the art of literature/storytelling is lost. Derrick and Stephanie must remember what it was like to be a little reader. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great story for a child about to perceive the world around him/her, November 9, 2010
This review is from: Mischief in the Forest: A Yarn Yarn (Flashpoint Press) (Hardcover)
This book is the perfect story for a child about to perceive the world around us.

Mischief in the Forest: A Yarn Yarn tells the story of a lonely woman that one day realizes that she is all but alone; she is actually surrounded by friends, only that they are non-humans.

The world around us is alive and vivid. Just because you don't have any humans around you doesn't mean that you are alone.
The story is perfect for a young child and the illustrations are colourful and exciting to watch.

I bought a copy of this book for my two-year old relative for Christmas. I believe this will be a wonderful gift and a book that he wants his parents to read over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this tale!, November 19, 2010
This review is from: Mischief in the Forest: A Yarn Yarn (Flashpoint Press) (Hardcover)
I ordered this book for my son and we both loved every bit of it! The story began with wonderful grandmother Johnson who loved to live alone in the forest with one little problem; sometimes she would get lonely. As the story progresses, grandmother Johnson has a journey where she learns that she is not alone. She discovers that all of the magnificent creatures that live around her in the forest are her dear companions and that there was never any need to be lonely. Infused throughout the book is the understanding that we are not alone in the complexity of a beautifully alive world. The illustrations are colorful and artistic and leave the reader with a warm feeling of love and companionship. After my son closed the book, he went outside to look for his friends in the forest too! I loved this book and highly recommend it for all young ones, and old ones too!
