Biography

“My greatest hope is that it ends up becoming the soundtrack to some perfect romance, or at the very least a great cocktail party,” says Jill Barber of her new album, ‘Fool’s Gold,’ out August 26th via Outside Music.

Editorial Reviews

Jill Barber has always had stars in her eyes. It's a natural side effect of gazing up at the moon and composing songs bathed in its silvery glow. From her modest beginnings as a shy acoustic folkie on the local coffeehouse stage, Barber's career has also been looking up. With the release of her fourth album Mischievous Moon, a stunning concoction of sweeping strings and dramatic orchestration backing Barber's unmistakable contralto, Jill Barber's evolution to confident chanteuse is complete.

Great modern songs in a standards style. I'd love to hear her sing the oldies. Her voice and stylings are very reminiscent of Julie London, with a twist of Edith Piaf and even Nancy Wilson. Simply lovely!

This woman is incredible. She has that sixties lounge music down pat; even the packaging hearkens to an earlier time. Money well spent.

The first notes of the first song on this album fill you with foreboding: brushed drums, a simple string bassline, and even simpler piano chords played in pulsing eighth notes, Fats Domino style.
What have I gotten myself into? You wonder.
Then Jill Barber's voice comes in, with that unmistakable mid-century blend of little-girl timbre and orotund vowels, and you have your answer: you've gotten yourself into a mess of nostalgia, and the only thing that will deliver you to the other side of these 41 minutes with your sanity intact will be the quality of the songs.
Luckily for us, these are great songs. Also luckily for us, Jill Barber and her co-conspirators recognize no functional difference between torch ballads, Patsy Cline-era country music, and cocktail jazz.
Best of all, if their love of these various musical anachronisms is ironic, it's impossible to tell -- the wordless background vocals, the plinking pianos, the string sections, and Barber's little-girl-about-town singing style all combine to create what sounds like a purely and sincerely loving pastiche of musical elements that, for anyone under the age of 60, will sound both eerily familiar (from movies your parents like) and utterly foreign.
From the decorous cha-cha of "Took Me by Surprise" (with its unbelievably cheesy horn chart) to the torchy orchestral pop of "Tenderness," the music is certainly gimmicky, but the pleasure is real. R. Anderson

Fav tracks: "Took Me By Surprise", Any Fool Can Fall in Love".

The album debuts at # 14 of the Billboard Jazz Charts. Issue date: May 12, 2012

I don't normally go for this genre (jazz), but this artist REALLY pulls it off. I put the song on repeat and gave it a few listens (which I do for all new music to give me time to really soak it in) and I by the 3rd loop I found myself singing along and totally entranced with the lyrics and (of course) her incredible distinctive voice. The production, instrumentation, and background vocals are all top notch as well and a true pleasure.

Do what I did and throw "Never quit loving you" in a loop or a (similarly paced) playlist and give it a few listens... I think you'll find yourself singing along in no time!

I heard Jill Barber on a free Amazon download. Upon reading another review of this album that pointed out this wasn't the complete original release of Mischievous Moon but only part, and the rest of the songs were from her prior release Always, I contacted her record company. They told me the only way to get the original release was to order it from a Canadian company, which I did for $17.99 + $8.18 shipping, total of $26.17. I did get an autographed copy, which was nice, and songs not available in the U.S.
However, it is an injustice to this artist to not have released the original album in the U.S. I'm sure that one listen and most would buy the Always album too, as her singing and the arrangements make you just want to hear more. I hope Jill Barber gets more control over her recordings and how they are released, as she is a talent deserving to be heard.

It's nice to hear an album with out auto tune or screeching in the guise of singing. Sweet, simple and smooth songs, with actual instruments. Hopefully this album catches on.

Heard this album while shopping in a gallery so asked the person behind the counter "Who IS that?" Turned out the counter person is also the local radio station's jazz DJ. Great find.
