Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3?Latsut longs to be rich. One day as he hunts, an elk dares him to climb Ta-co-bet to learn the true meaning of wealth. Thus begins the man's long and dangerous adventure. His tale is filled with courage and success as, obsessed by the quest, he braves the mountain's cliffs and chasms to reach its snowy summit. With success, he finds the buried treasure he sought and takes it all, leaving no gift of thanks to the mountain. The angered spirits send terrifying storms to stop him. As he meets each spirit, he sheds part of his treasure to appease its anger. Finally, he collapses in a deep slumber. Elk protects and guards him for years. When he eventually awakens, he has learned the value of life, nature, family, and friends. Latsut is now content, rich with the love of his people. Readers will be transported to Mount Rainier through Morgan's full-page watercolors that convey Latsut's greed; the woods and scenes below the mountain; the steep climb; and the battle against weather and the mountain itself. There is power, fear, strength, and anguish in these paintings. The color, drama, and story should carry well to young audiences. An author's source note is included. A fine book for storyhour, classroom presentation, or family-values sharing.?Susannah Price, Boise Public Library, ID

By A Customer
This review is from: The Miser on the Mountain: A Nisqually Legend of Mount Rainier (Hardcover)
My six-year old daughter recently became very interested in Native American folklore in the past couple of months. We checked this book out at the library and are now buying it for our collection. Very well-written and illustrated. A must for anyone interested in Pacific Northwest lore....
