On another level, it is a drama of crime, punishment and rehabilitation set against a panoramic description of French society after Napoleon. But above all, Hugos masterpiece is about the metaphysical struggle between good and evil in the soul of every man. It is a plea for social justice, political enlightenment and personal charity.

Borders Classics Edition,

Borders Classics Edition. Hardback. 2004. This abridged edition of the massive Les Miserables translated by Charles Wiblur. I don't know if a paperback edition is available by now. I would recommend, however, this Hardback edition as the paperback binding is likely to crack after some time (because, even though it is abridged version, the book will surely take quite a bit of time to finish!)
