Mismatch is being marketed as if it were a new Tami Hoag book, typical of her recent mystery offerings. It is not. Several of her older, light-weight romance style books have been re-packaged and are being offered as if new presumably to capitalize on her current reputation. This is the second time in the past few months that I fell for this.
Mismatch's publication date is 2008. After I received it and read the first few pages, I could immediately tell that this was definitely not something that I would normally read. I checked the inside cover and knew why. The Copyright date for the book is 1989. The Copyright date for the "Cover image" is 2008. Old book, new cover. The age of the book alone would not have caused me to give it the 1 Star rating. Lots of terrific reads are older than that. And, the basic premise was okay, if unoriginal -- two incompatible people are thrown together and despite their difference, are irresistably drawn to each other. The core problem for me was that there was not much else to the book. The plot was almost non-existent, the character development was shallow (and it is a stretch to even reference characterization at all with respect to this book), and the writing was completely uninspired. Other than the mundane descriptions of mutual lust, the most exciting thing that happens here is a sheep chewing up the pages of a report that then has to be re-copied and sent again. Spoiler Alert - Just joking. There can't be a spoiler. From the minute the two characters meet on Page 7 and the silly descriptions of their desire begin on Page 11, you already know what the outcome will be. And the journey getting there could not duller.

Mismatch by Tami Hoag. I thought this book was very cute and at some points I did laugh out loud. I think this would be good if you need an easy, quick book.

*Audio version - This is not a bad story, even if the plot is predictable. It's light and entertaining, not a bad summer read. The thing that annoyed me is the narrator's voice when she's channeling 'Wade', our hero. I don't mind her other voices, but as Wade is the main male character, her exaggerated/hoarse low voice just came across rather comical and made him sound dim-witted. It just grated on my nerves. Granted this is a personal preference, but I would recommend sampling the audio if you're considering buying the audiobook.

I was sadly disappointed in this particular book of Tami Hoag's. I have read many of her wonderful novels in the past and was pretty much expecting another wonderful thriller. Instead I got a short love story - boy meets girl, relationship questionable, all's good in the end. This is the first time in all the years of purchasing and reading Tami Hoag's novels that I have ever been disappointed in her books. All of the previously read books would normally rate a five star from me. I could only give this one a one star.
