5.0 out of 5 stars A rare combination of emotive and instrumental power., September 1, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Misplaced Childhood (Audio CD)
For about a year, Misplaced Childhood was the most cherished album in my then 250-disc collection. It isn't now (for sake of musical discovery), but it still has an unfletching connection to me. I don't think this album - or the band - can truly have wide appeal, but for those of us who fall for the charms of Fish & Co., musical ecstasy rarely gets much better. MC is a very personal album and isn't one that bears the need for song-by-song critical evaluation. The album is the distillation of a band's raw emotion at its creative peak. MC is the kind of album where you just let go and allow it to carry you over its soaring peaks and through its deep chasms. What makes this album so important to its fans isn't the playing or the instrumentation or the arrangements - even if these are all excellent in execution - but its ability to grab ahold of your innermost soul and transmit incredible emotive power through the lyrics of a rock poet in his prime. I even cried during one listening session. Very few albums can connect to a listener like Misplaced Childhood. I know a few people who listened to the album and didn't think much of it, but this isn't mass-market music. It isn't a challenging listen - Marillion has great ability to write gorgeous melodic music - but the album precludes passive listening. MC is one of those albums I think everyone should experience. If it grabs you, you'll likely place it as one of your most essential albums.

Its hard to find an album with only good reviews.

You are going to have a hard time finding someone who has heard this record a couple of times and feel unchanged.

There is no childhoods end.

Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Will blow your ears away, May 24, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Misplaced Childhood (Audio CD)
I got this album in Egypt, in the late 1980s, from a friend there who was up on European bands. From there, I took the cassette on all my travels; it is one of those rare albums you want to listen to-in entirety-dozens of times in a row.

Marillion's songs (on this album; I've not heard their others) have the haunting quality of some Alan Parsons, and the first album by Pearl Jam. Because there are no strong breaks between songs, this seems to be a "theme" album, in the vein of "The Wall" or "Sgt. Pepper"...here the theme is stream-of-consciousness reminiscences. Listening while reading the lyrics bears this out, such as when the last lines of "Lost Weekend" segue into the subject of "Blue Angel".

If nothing musical has "electrified" you in awhile, get this album! It won't be cheap, because its an import, but it will be worth it. I just got a CD, because my cassette was worn clear out; and the music is as beautiful as ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best albums ever!, November 12, 1998

I'm glad there are other people who know what I know. Sadly, few Americans know of the band.

This album is best listened to in one sitting.

It's the musical equivalent of Catcher in the Rye. I give no higher compliment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marillion's Best. A Must-Have!, July 19, 1998
This review is from: Misplaced Childhood (Audio CD)
I was first introduced to Marillion years ago with this album. I was hooked at the first listen. The lyrics are inspired, inspiring, and sometimes inspired lunacy. Marillionites around the world seem to agree, despite their personal preferences, that Misplaced Childhood was their best, Fish-ful or Fish-less. This album has messages and commentaries on today's society but at the same time entertains to the hilt. Beware first-time listeners....it is highly addictive.

I dont really have a top-10 list of favourites, but I can say unequivocably that Misplaced Childhood is my favourite album of all time. 10 years after being given a second-hand home-recorded tape, I still can't get enough.

"How can we justify? They call us civilised."

5.0 out of 5 stars Yhe Epitomy Of The Band At Its Best, June 22, 1998

If you have one Marillion Album it is probably this one this gave them the chart success that had eluded them and took them out of the "darkness of worldwide cult status". I remember hearing a demo version of the album at The Brixton Academy in 1983/4 it was very rough and lacked a little of the honed polish of the final album but the embryonic tracks and the genre of the album were apparent. If you are into smoking illegal substances and listening to mellow sounds then this is not your music......this is for the person who wants to get blind drunk and cry aloud and isnt afraid to do so. To be at wembley arena and listen to 10,000 fans singing both tracks of the album (side 1 and side 2 ) word perfect was also a high point of my youth.

This took the classic concept album and brought the idea up to date .....and came very very close to stealing the crown from the all time greatest album Dark Side Of the Moon...... close but not that close

The power of the lyrics and the voice of Fish got me hooked from the begining. I still remember this album when it just came out to the market. It doesn't matter what kind of music you like- JUST GO BUY IT NOW!(if you can still get it...) It's a celebration of music. One of the best albums of all times. Enjoy!

The first Marillion-song I ever heard was a live version of Slainte Mhath from The Thieving Mapie-album. I was hooked... That was 10 years ago. Marillion is still one of my favourite bands, and the album that's still most special to me is this one. I listen to it on my walkman a lot, walking across town, on the train, or wherever... it doesn't really matter where, because the music never fails to take me away to some different world. And the lyrics... WOW... this is a man who isn't afraid to show what he's feeling... Did this album change my life? Most definitely. Buy it!
