ALL THAT & MORE,

This review is from: Misplaced Childhood (Audio CD)
I can only say I waited too long to find this double CD! Not only do you get the great album Misplaced Childhood you get the B-sides to the singles, something Marillion has been known for, but you get demo recordings and alternate mixes. As far as the B-sides go I would suggest buying B'sides Themselves, which is an excellent recording of the flip sides to their singles through the years.Once I like something it is usually difficult for me to accept changes, but Marillion proved me wrong. It's hard to believe the work they put into these demo versions. I can understand the B sides, but these demos contain a lot of work; they kick! I'd comment on the music on these discs, but Marillion has never put out a second rate product and they didn't start here. This is beyond music it is ART! Misplaced Childhood shows a wide expanse of emotions experienced during the long tour for the previous album Fugazi. The best songs to me are both B-sides "Lady Nina" and "Freaks". The quality recordings don't stop there; there are 3 great versions of "Kayleigh", 2 of "Lavender", plus "Lavender Blue" and 3 of "Heart of Lothian". Please don't think there isn't anything else worth listening to, though! There are 27 songs here and you should enjoy them all. I would say this is a once in a lifetime for a group, but they've done it with Script for a Jester's Tear and B'sides Themselves. I really don't think you could go wrong buying any of the releases with Fish as the vocalist. To say this is highly recommended isn't enough. This is one of the best recordings ever put onto laser. The 24 bit digital remastering makes this so much the better. Get a cool one, or, two, sit back and enjoy this. It's a great ride!

Especially for serious fans of Marillion or their erstwhile lead vocalist Fish, this double CD set is a pleasure and full of fun surprises. If you already know and love "Misplaced Childhood," like me, you might get a lot out of hearing the "alternative" versions of songs like "Kayleigh" and "Lavender [Blue]." There's also a full-length demo version of the concept album on the second disc, including some interesting versions of songs that didn't stay the same in the final release. But more importantly, there are songs here ("Lady Nina," "Freaks") that were recorded around the same time, but didn't even make it onto the demo for the record company; some true rarities. Luckily, the original 1985 album in its entirety makes up the entire first disc, so there's nothing to "interfere" with a purist's desire to listen *only* to that cycle. I'm also pleased to note that the digital remastering has left the sound crisp and clean. My opinion has always been that this is Marillion's best; I think some of Fish's solo work (e.g., "Internal Exile") surpasses it, but Marillion never did better as a band before or after Fish's departure.

Some of the best prog EVER. This 2 cd set lets you experience the Fish led Marillion at the top of their game. What was vinyl side one (tracks 1-5) contains some of the best music of any genre. Seamless and timeless.

Ju Ju is in denial. This is a great album that features some great songs such as the powerful "Hearts of Lothian" , "Lavender" and many others. What an awesome progressive statement in a time when prog was not very fashionable. Once again JU JU es poo poo.

I was introduced to Marillion in the mid 80's, Misplaced Childhood being the initial album I heard. I was in the Air Force and on a trip in England when I met a girl named Shuna who blew my mind with this ecletic sound. I had never heard anything like it, being bombarded with the Bon Jovi's and Twisted Sister's of the day. I still listen to this album TO THIS VERY DAY! I have never stopped loving the finely orchestrated melodies and harder riffs. It takes me back to England every time I listen to it and a very special time in my life. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a solid album of beautiful sound....

What can I say? Not only is Marillion my favorite band ever (I'm an anorak myself), but Misplaced Childhood is my all-time favorite recording.Possibly the best of the Fish era CDs, this remastered version sounds better than ever, and includes a bonus disc with a demo of the whole album. Outstanding! Unlike many other bonus discs or "includes previously unreleased material" presentations, this additional tracks are not only for the die hards, but for anyone who's ever listened to the whole MC album and enjoyed at least 'Kayleigh' and/or 'Lavender' should give this a try. This are slightly different versions (as working demos tend to be), but of great quality and quite polished. You can't miss...!

Misplaced Childhood is Found in Improved Form,

This was the band's breakthrough album on the strength of the excellant singles/ballads "Kayleigh," and "Lavender." "Heart Of Lothian," however is my favourite among this album's singles, followed by "Lavender."The angry venom of "Expresso Bongo," and the unrepentant idealism of "White Feather," make for songs as good, if not better, than those singles. If you already have this album on disc, this is still worth your purchase. I say this on the strength of tracks 2-5 on Disc 2. "Freaks" will sneak up on you, and the alt-vers. of the singles sound fresher. High five.

A Great Concept recording,

It's Marillion at there very best, the whole recording is seamless in concept and in excution. I've been a Marillion fan ever since I bought this CD in the late 80's, and when the remastered cd came out I just had to have it. And needless to say I was not disapointed, the second CD just adds to what is already an astounding offering

The greatest concept album I have ever heard!,

I discovered this album when I was stationed in Germany in the late 80's. It has been stuck in my head ever since! The lyrics are INCREDIBLE! The songs are haunting, and blended seamlessly to create the best 41 minutes of constant music on any CD I have ever heard.

Fantastic Concept Album,

This CD is fantastic! It has always been my favorite Marillion album & this double CD only made it better! It is one of the finest "concept albums" I've ever heard! If you've never heard of Marillion, this is a great album to start with! Marillion (to me, anyway) can best be decribed as a cross between Pink Floyd & Peter Gabriel. Enjoy!
