This is a highly flattering account of the most important year in Myerson's life, 1945, when she won the title of Miss America. She was the first Jewish woman to do so. All the backstage drama of that postwar pageant is recounted, along with her own nervousness and unlikely background. Dworkin contends that subsequent disputes between would-be managers and some anti-Semitic rejection soured the year of glory. Myerson then threw herself into humanitarian campaigns and found some brief security in marriage.
