Book Description

3 and upP and upMiss Bindergarten Books
This third picture book starring the beloved Miss Bindergarten takes a look at what happens when everyone's favorite kindergarten teacher gets sick. On Sunday the flu hits, and on Monday Miss Bindergarten stays home from kindergarten. But never fear, the substitute teacher Mr. Tusky is on the scene. Although on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, other students stay home sick, the class works together with the substitute to keep things running smoothly. Busy with show-and-tell, singing songs, and making get-well cards, they receive a joyous surprise on Friday, when Miss Bindergarten (and everyone else) is back!

With vigorous text and brisk rhymes, this clever book also manages to teach the days of the week in a playful, appealing way. Ashley Wolff's bright and exuberant illustrations burst with kindergarten activity.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

On Sunday morning, sad but true,
Miss Bindergarten got the flu.
"I'm aching and shaking right down to the bone.
Tomorrow I fear I shall have to stay home."
Sure enough, Monday morning comes, and Miss Bindergarten's class is upset to see that their beloved teacher is nowhere to be found. Soon Mr. Tusky arrives to fill in for Miss Bindergarten, with an endearing appeal to his temporary students: "I hope you'll help me through the day--I'm just a wee bit rusty." Adam the alligator, Brenda the beaver, Christopher the cat, and all the alphabetized others rise gallantly to the occasion, showing Mr. Tusky the ropes of kindergarten life: show and tell, song singing, and picture painting. But one by one, day by day, classmates drop like flu-ridden flies.

The many delights of kindergarten--even a sick day, if it includes ginger ale and bendy straws--are captured perfectly in this third in the popular Miss Bindergarten series. As in their two previous books about the canine schoolteacher and her multicultural (hippos, monkeys, lizards, pigs, etc.) classroom (Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten and Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the 100th Day of Kindergarten), Joseph Slate and Ashley Wolff use gentle little verses and a simple story line to introduce young readers to the happy world of kindergarten. (Ages 4 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-In this third adventure, Miss Bindergarten catches the flu and misses school. The story starts on Sunday when she realizes she isn't well and chronicles the happenings in her class throughout the week under the direction of the worthy substitute Mr. Tusky, who describes himself as "-just a wee bit rusty." Each day another student becomes ill and, like Miss Bindergarten, has to stay home. However, school carries on and by Friday, teacher and kindergartners are well enough to return to school. Poor Mr. Tusky spends his weekend in bed with the flu. As in the earlier titles, the text rhymes and the students' names each start with a different letter of the alphabet. Here, as an added bonus, Slate introduces the days of the week. The brightly colored illustrations are attractive and fun and youngsters will relish their many details. The pictures of the housebound students are especially charming. This book will alleviate the concerns of children who worry what will happen if their teacher is absent or sick. This book should find a spot on every library shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Joys of Kindergarten, November 6, 2000
This review is from: Miss Bindergarten Stays Home from Kindergarten (Miss Bindergarten Books) (Hardcover)
It's Sunday and poor Miss Bindergarten has come down with the flu and she won't be able to teach school tomorrow. But, not to worry, Mr Tusky, the very able substitute, is here. And with the help of the children, Adam the alligator, Brenda the beaver, Christopher the cat... and the rest of the alphabetized named class, they don't miss a thing...show and tell, drawing and painting, singing...Unfortunately, with each day, another student falls victim to the flu. That is until Friday, when everybody is back for a full day with Miss Bindergarten. On Saturday and Sunday, everyone gets to stay home, especially a very sick Mr Tusky! Joseph Slate has written a very gentle, rhyming story about the joys of kindergarten, even when the flu hits. Ashley Wolff's, expressive, detailed illustrations, compliment the story perfectly as you watch the class play, learn and even fall sick. Together, they take some of the mystery and fear out of kindergarten life. A wonderful, delightful story all kindergarteners will love and want to read again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poor Miss Bindergarten :(, August 13, 2000

This review is from: Miss Bindergarten Stays Home from Kindergarten (Miss Bindergarten Books) (Hardcover)
Poor Miss Bindergarten gets sick and needs to stay home. The book is just as good as the other two. The illustrations are beautiful. They are detailed and really lend themselves to discussion questions. (My students don't like me to turn the pages too quickly!) The language flows nicely with wonderful rhymes. My students love to figure out which words rhyme. I would recommend this for all primary grades.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Book for children, May 5, 2003
This review is from: Miss Bindergarten Stays Home from Kindergarten (Miss Bindergarten Books) (Hardcover)
Miss Bindergarten is a dog who teaches school to a lot of baby animals. I read this book to my four year old, and he loved it. After we were done reading the book he hugged it and smiled really big. The book is intended for an audience of 4 or 5 year olds (maybe even the first graders). There are 38 unnumbered pages in this book. This book is illustrated by Ashley Wolff, and she does a brillant job. I usually don't like to pitch authors and illustrators, but there was a lot thought and care put into these illustrations so I just have to say something about this illustrator. At this age -- illustrations are everything. We spent about 10 minutes reading this book (5 of those minutes were me trying to get to the next page). Then about 45 minutes looking at the pictures and naming the different little animals. My son wanted to look at and ask questions about each page -- very stimulating for his little mind. I highly recommend this book.
