Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

N.M. Bodecker's illustrations are as quaint and witty as ever in Miss Jaster's Garden, first published in 1972. After Miss Jaster mistakenly scatters flower seeds over Hedgie the hedgehog's quills, he begins to sprout and bloom, then dances out of the garden. Miss Jaster calls for the constable to help her recover her stolen flowers.

This is a book I remembered fondly from childhood. I always thought about the beautiful artwork, the lovely story and the lesson that accompanied it when read to me by my mother. I loved to look at the map of the area where Miss Jaster lived and pretend I was there. It is a beautifully written, exquisitely illustrated story of an unlikely friendship. It was so lovely, it stayed with me until I decided to buy it again in my 30's!

I am thrilled to find that this book is again available. It was one of my very favorites when I was a child, and I have tried to find it for other little girls, but until now, it was out of print. I think I will order several copies to keep on hand for gifts. The illustrations are wonderful. The look on Hedgie's face as he dances makes me laugh out loud just to think of it, and the story is so sweet.

This was one of my favorite books as a child (about 25 years ago) and I still love it. I love the way Hedgie is so gentle with Miss Jaster and himself. And how the flowers blooming on his back are like a release of joy he didn't realize he had. I like the humor too, especially as Hedgie imagines what might grow on him. I also love the illustrations. And it even has a map in the book cover!

This was one of my favorite books as a child too. I am happy to see that others love it so much as well. The illustrations are absolutely wonderful. I am very upset because I have managed to lose my copy that I had as a child, and I want so badly to be able to read it to my son.

I read this book to my 4 small children 20 years ago and lost my copy when loaned it out too many times. My oldest daughter located a copy at an out of print shop in NY and gave it to me for my birthday 2 years ago. I'd love to find another copy to give back to her. A story that will touch you and your children by the thoughtfulness of Hedgie toward Miss Jaster's nearsightedness... and of Miss J's kindness to a bedragled little Hedgie. His dance of ecstacy when he declares "I'm in bloom" is priceless. Should be reissued in a new edition! Great Book.

Reading over previous reviews, I am glad there are others who feel the same way as I do about this book. I read it as a child but when I recently recalled it, I could not remember the title and searched in vain for some time for books on hedgehogs and gardens! I don't know how I finally found it but I'm so glad I did. I purchased a copy immediately. I too used to pore over the map of the garden and wished I was there. It's a lovely, timeless book with fantastic illustrations and a sweet story line.

I sat in a Doctors office waiting room and read this while my husband was being examined. I was delighted by the sweet and original way this author chose to tell this story. I loved every character in this tale and would and will recommend it to anyone and everyone. In fact, we went back to the Doctors office to find it, wrote to the publisher, and could not find a copy of this cute little story. We actually considered stealing it. We love a good story, but not that much. HELP HELP HELP!!!!

I remembered this book ever since my daughter used to get it out of the library. For years it was out of print, but luckily someone decided to put it back into publication.
This endearing tale of a near-sighted lady and the hedgehog who lives in her garden (and unwittingly becomes a walking bouquet) will delight everyone, young and old.
The illustrations are done in a charming watercolored pen and ink format, enhancing the fun of the story.
