5.0 out of 5 stars funny and entertaining
I've thoroughly enjoyed all the Miss Julia books, but this one just might be the funniest one so far, or at least tied with the first book. 3.0 out of 5 stars Okay filler
The phallic jokes were kind of jr high to me. However, I liked that Miss Julia was encouraging the pastor's wife to defy her husband, and have some fun.

I've thoroughly enjoyed all the Miss Julia books, but this one just might be the funniest one so far, or at least tied with the first book. Miss Julia's housekeeper and friend, Lillian, is about to lose her home and her neighbors are in the same predicament. Clarence Gibbs owns the houses and the surrounding property and is evicting everyone to tear it all down and build a water bottling plant, of all things. Miss Julia won't stand for it, though, and with the help of her friends and eventually the whole town, she sets out to raise enough money to buy the land and houses from Gibbs before he can carry out his plan. But to Miss Julia's dismay, the biggest fundraising event of all might be one she has to participate in herself: riding a motorcycle. Full of hilarity and fun, the fourth book in the series is just as good as the first three and shows that the series is far from losing steam. I can't wait for the fifth book.

This book is WONDERFUL! Miss Julia and her escapdes keep getting funnier by the book. I have purchased this series for
my mother and numerous friends, and don't know anyone who doesn't love this series.
My sister in law is even reading them to her husband!
This book is the funniest of the series, so far.
One can just imagine this starchy lady hanging on the back of a
motorcycle with torn leather pants, borrowed from Hazel Marie.
I read books of all kinds, but these are my favorites.
Do yourself a favor and read them all!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of Fun, April 23, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Miss Julia Hits the Road (Southern Comedy of Manners) (Hardcover)
When I first read the jacket blurb, I had doubts about Miss Julia and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. It just seemed like too much of a stretch. But I enjoyed reading this book from start to finish. It's every bit as delightful as the first book in the series, much funnier than #3. Frequently I had to stop reading just to laugh out loud. The bike ride is certainly wild, but I think my favorite moments in the book include when Hazel Marie yanks the hairpiece off her rival Tammi's head and when Miss Julia gets so mad at Pastor Ledbetter that she deliberately talks his wife into defying him.

4.0 out of 5 stars Miss Julia And The Hogs, April 17, 2003

Miss Julia again comes through for her friends when they need her. Most of us ladies realize that our maids are our best friends and we don't want them mistreated. And what Miss Julia goes through to defend the underdog! And her friends rise to the occasion or should I say ride. It's a whole new experience for the intrepid lady and those she takes along. Another breathtaking ending, and I think I see a love story coming as the sequal because Sam is smitten !

5.0 out of 5 stars MY second favorite Miss Julia!, November 24, 2006
Besides the original Miss Julia book, this is the best! It has the humour and the Southern charm that the original captured. Some of the other Miss Julia books are a litte strident and formulaic, but, in this one, Miss Julia shows her Southern etiquette and her spunk to the reader's delight. The description of the race is very funny and her thoughts are clearly those of a woman trying to move with the times in spite of her better judgment. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Motorcycle Church Lady, November 11, 2007
By

(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)

This is the fourth book in the Miss Julia series, and my favorite thus far. Miss Julia is opinionated, and being an old-fashioned church goer and widow lady, she knows what's right and does it. She goes right ahead and tells others what they need to do, which they often don't appreciate. Her motives are pure; in this book she goes on a huge all out campaign to save the house of her housekeeper and dear friend, Lillian, while fearing that her beau, Sam, is losing his mind. Miss Julia needs to convince as many over age fifty, "ladies of quality" to take the shocking step of riding on motorcycles in a poker run fund raiser, to save the homes of Lillian and her neighbors. It's a wild and fun ride. If you are new to the series you can just jump right in and start with this title, or with the first book, Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind.

I can get lost in these books. I am 79 years old and thought all the "good old days' books were behind me till I found these. The charactors are just so real, it's like a trip back home!

Maybe I'm biased because I've lived my life in the South, but Miss Julia is a great character. Ann Ross's writing is fresh and funny and moves quickly. Ms. Ross had me laughing out loud.

5.0 out of 5 stars Miss Julia rides a Harley, August 15, 2005

Miss Julia is devoted to her housekeeper Lillian, so when Lillian's landlord threatens to evict her, along with the rest of the neighborhood, the prim Presbyterian jumps into action. She and her friends begin a campaign to raise enough money to purchase the threatened neighborhood and to refurbish it for its tenants. The major fundraising event is to be a Poker Run for motorcycles. Miss Julia refuses to participate until she is offered a large sum of money to ride with her friend Sam. Throwing caution to the wind, Miss Julia persuades her prominent friends to participate in the motorcyle ride, and she herself climbs into Sam's sidecar. Thus begins one of the most hilarious and star-crossed motorcyle events ever. Despite the disapproval of her pastor and the sabatoge tactics of an enemy, she dons a pair of black leather pants and rides into the sunset. What will author Ann B. Ross think of next? I can't wait to find out!
