3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as the others....
Is it just me, or is the author Miss Ross determined to pair up each of her major characters? I really enjoyed this novel, even if, for the most part, nothing really happened. Miss Julia is determined to throw a wedding for her boarder Coleman, and the town lawyer Binkie. Meanwhile, her husband's ex-mistress Hazel-Marie is still dating Mr. Pickins and Little Lloyd is...

If you have read "Miss Julia Speaks Out" and Miss Julia Takes Over" and loved them, you will also love this third book in the series......In this book we find fiesty Miss Julia Springer back with all her friends in a delightful, warm, story that takes place in her small southern town....As Miss Julia is a proper southern lady with a penchant for proper behavior, she is quick to make arrangements for a wedding between the handsome deputy Coleman Bates and his love Binkie Enloe. Binkie and Coleman told Miss Julia that they planned to get married in a quick ceremony at city hall in one week. Miss Juilia felt this was not proper, therefore just took over the planning: flowers, preacher, cake, food, music, use of her home, etc. She engaged the help of Hazel Marie and her young son Little Lloyd. Hazel Marie was the paramour of Julia's late husband.Lloyd Springer and Little Lloyd is his son. Julia took them both in when they had no where else to go and learned to love them both......The arrangements have been completed when Binkie and Coleman decide that they do not want to go thru with it, much to Miss Julia's anguish......A few other problems arise also....... I found this to be a warm hearted story and missed the characters when the story ended.......These three books about Miss Julia remind me of the Mitford Years Series of Jan Karon. Both authors write witty, charming stories of small, friendly, southern towns....Enjoyable!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ms. Ross Hits Another Homer, May 24, 2002

I fell in live with Ms. Ross' writing when I read her first little mystery paper back. And I fell head over heals in love when I read her Miss Julia series. Never has there been a more deliteful group of southern characters in (almost) real life situations. Ms. Ross makes em come alive as I can't wait to get to the next chapter and the end.. But alas when I arive there I'm sorry it's over and can't wait for the next book. Keep em comin' , Ms. Ross!
Oh yes ... start with the first book and read em all in order.

5.0 out of 5 stars Miss Julia's At It Again, June 8, 2002
By
Miss Julia is one of my favorite people.A small town Southern
Presbyterian, she can get into trouble just by following her well meaning instincts. Though she doesn't approve of Binkie and Colemon's life style, she does everything she knows how to help them get things straightened out without appearing to be judgmental. Along with this, she improves the lot of her tenants while teaching Little Loyd business skills. Or maybe he's teaching her . Then, there's the threat of an escaped kleptomaniac to reckon with, not to mention Miss Julia's resignation from the prayer chain. I can't wait for the movie !

4.0 out of 5 stars A Wedding to Remember, September 11, 2004

I really enjoy reading the Miss Julia books and this one did not disappoint. However, I must say that I never felt the "plot thicken." Binkie and Coleman finally agree to get married, but then Binkie has second thought. Miss Julia just won't allow it...and vows to make sure the wedding happens. I never felt like the wedding wouldn't take place. I did wonder about the commotion across the street that you don't find out about until the end of the book. It's a cute story, but pretty predictable.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is my favorite Miss Julia so far, June 23, 2005

Be careful what you wish for, should be the watchword to Miss Julia. In order to try to get her attorney Binkie Enloe & Deputy Coleman Bates (who are living without benefit of matrimony) married, Miss Julia agrees to throw a weding for them on a week's notice. Miss Julia, Lillian (her housekeeper and closest advisor) & her friends, go all out to stage a lovely but small wedding ceremony. It seems as if time and circumstances intervene to place one stumbling block after another in their way but the worst happens when Binkie decides to call off the wedding. Ostensibly, Binkie is the defense attorney for an escaped prisoner and Coleman is sworn to apprehend him and send him to jail; this is the premise she explains to Miss Julia for deciding not to marry Coleman. Deep seated philosophical differences that cannot be reconciled have kept them apart.
Miss Julia and Lillian decide that maybe things will change in the course of the next fews days and the couple will reconsider and get married as intended. To that end, they carry on with the plans for the wedding which will be held in Julia's living room. Their thinking is, if there's a wedding we'll be ready and if there's not we'll throw a party.
Julia and Lillian soon discover however that there is an even more urgent reason to get the couple to consent to the bonds of Holy matrimony ASAP. Since everyone knew that the couple had been enjoying the honeymoon before taking the steps to become man and wife, the inevitable has happened and Binkie is 4 months along "in the family way".
Binkie's real reason for not wanting to marry is that she doesn't want to trap Coleman (who is hopelessly in love with Binkie and is eager to get married no matter what the reason).
Everyone involved in the wedding plans now finds themselves in a tizzy of a dliemma and they pray for some miracle (along with their intervention) to occur that will bring Binkie and Coleman to the alter.
Be careful what you pray for..........I hope you'll love this story as much as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars very funny, June 12, 2003

Upon hearing that Binkie and Coleman are planning a quick courthouse wedding, Miss Julia takes it upon herself to give them a proper wedding. But, as will happen with these things, one problem after another comes up, everything from an escaped thief to a strange occurrence at the half-constructed family life center to an attempt of the bride to back out of the wedding. Never lacking in action and mishaps and amusing situations, the story progresses to a happy ending for all. Just as hilarious as the first two Miss Julia books, this is a very enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars doing a mapquest for directions to Miss Julia's world, June 19, 2006
This review is from: Miss Julia Throws a Wedding (Mass Market Paperback)
I read these books because I love the feel of them - the small town with its gossips and good Samaritans, Miss Julia with her sense of propriety and justice. The books are not big on plot, but I don't think that's what they're about. The endings are predictable because they are 'feel good' books. I'd be sorely disappointed if the guy didn't get the girl in the end or if I had to read about the demise of any one of the characters. I'm not looking for reality when I pick up a Miss Julia book. I'm looking for a glimpse into a gentler world than the one I see on televison, at the movies, or in many of the bestselling novels out there. The writing is colorful, humorous, and entertaining. I even find myself inspired to do good deeds after reading about one of Miss Julia's exploits. The only problem I have with these books is that I wish there were more of them. I gobble one up and then have to wait so long before a new one comes out. If you liked Andy of Mayberry, you'll love Miss Julia.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wedding like no other, August 9, 2005

When Miss Julia's lawyer, Binkie Enloe, and her boyfriend Coleman decide to get married, Miss Julia cannot hide her joy and relief. Although the happy couple would be satisfied with a quick trip to the Justice of the Peace, Miss Julia will have none of that. She decides to have a full-scale flowers, guests, and music affair at her stately home. This, despite the fact that she has only one week to work on it. As with all Miss Julia books, her best intentions of a prim and proper affair go out the window and hilarious complications arise, including a reluctant bride and the miraculous appearing of Mary on the side of the new Presbyterian Life Center which is being built across the street from Miss Julia's home. There are further complications of a thief in town, and a skittish associate pastor, just to spice up the proceedings. As always with this series, this is a delightful read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as the others...., May 6, 2005

Is it just me, or is the author Miss Ross determined to pair up each of her major characters? I really enjoyed this novel, even if, for the most part, nothing really happened. Miss Julia is determined to throw a wedding for her boarder Coleman, and the town lawyer Binkie. Meanwhile, her husband's ex-mistress Hazel-Marie is still dating Mr. Pickins and Little Lloyd is still a nervous (but likeable) little boy.

There is an escaped criminal, Dixon Hightower to worry about, and new problems associated with the "Family Life Center." Miss Julia is being courted by Sam (a prospect I'm lukewarm about), and she's involved with the Preacher's wife and several small incidents.

Overall, this was a cute story, but not as good as the first two. Personally, while I enjoy the romantic elements, I'm not very keen on every character getting paired up. Miss Julia is more interesting to me without Sam, and without Mr. Pickins. I guess I like my heroines single-and-sassy.

5.0 out of 5 stars a thoroughly enjoyable book, December 14, 2004
This review is from: Miss Julia Throws a Wedding (Mass Market Paperback)
The WB's Gilmore Girls goes southern-well kind of. Ever wish you lived in that fictitious town of Stars Hollow? Well, in "Miss Julia Throws a Wedding" you can also picture another quirky population located in a small southern town. With her southern charm some stubbornness mixed in, Miss Julia's character is ever trying to do the proper thing. The mistress of Miss Julia's deceased husband and her child fathered by him live with Miss Julia. This book has Miss Julia planning a wedding for a couple who would just as soon elope. Miss Julia finds herself in a plot filled with twists and turns and choices of ethics. A thoroughly enjoyable and humorous story. You will want to read page after page until you have finished the book, but don't feel blue when you're done because there are more Miss Julia escapades to enjoy.
