A lesson on the dangers of ocean pollution and that even children can do something about it,
By Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Miss L'eau (Perfect Paperback)
James and David are two elementary school boys that live near the ocean and often hang out at an abandoned lighthouse. Miss L'eau is by far their favorite teacher even though there is something deeply mysterious about her. One day James is near the lighthouse when he sees Miss L'eau riding her bicycle down the street. Her hair, normally wrapped tightly in a bun, is flowing loosely and she is pedaling furiously towards the sea. He is shocked when she deliberately goes into the ocean and does not surface.
James goes back home and wakes in the morning and semi-mindlessly goes to school, expecting an announcement that Miss L'eau will not be there today. He is once again shocked when she is there acting as if nothing happened. Later, James and David see her repeat her act of riding into the sea and conclude that she is a mermaid. When they confront her, Miss L'eau admits that she is there to teach the children about the ecology of the oceans and the damage that human actions are doing to it. This galvanizes James and David into organizing a community clean up, which makes them into mini-celebrities and has a positive effect. In many ways, the best tactic to spur environmental action is to teach children about the dangers of pollution and the negative consequences that it has. Once children learn about it, they will then actively work to alter the behavior of their parents and other significant adults. This book is an excellent tool to help children learn about how they can be a part of the environmental action movement and the positive benefits that we all will gain from it.

Wonderfully Enchanting Story!,

This book was nothing short of delightful! What an imaginative mystery story that all kids will adore. And wrapped up in a great story is a lesson on ecology.
I think that most kids will find this story fun and adventurous. Whether you're reading it aloud to your children, or they are reading it themselves, it's not one that you can easily put down. I enjoyed every page of this little gem and I'm sure you will too. This book is rated for pre-teens, but it would be a great read aloud book for your younger children. It's only 58 pages long so it's not a huge chapter book that will take forever to get through. I'd recommend that you add this to your list of must have books for your kids.

Fun, Educational and Inspiring!,
This review is from: Miss L'eau (Perfect Paperback)
Miss L'eau, teaching children how they can be a part of an environmental action movement, is one of the best paperbacks written for pre-teens. The book begins by describing a typical elementary school teacher, Miss L'eau. She's short, has her hair in a bun and wears glasses. Does she remind you of anyone perhaps? Well, I am thinking of my 6th grade teacher who would always make good eye contact with us, especially if we became a bit unruly! Now with Miss L'eau there is something extra ordinary about her eyes!
Then we meet James and David who are two elementary school boys that live near the ocean and often hang out at an abandoned lighthouse. T. Katz is a brilliant writer who takes us on an adventure with the love of the sea, the building of a student- teacher relationship and finally a changed perspective of inspiration and hope for a better cleaned- up environment. If you're looking for a bit of a mystery, then you will love joining with David in discovering the first clue, her eyes. Miss L'eau's eyes are as blue-green as the sea, and if you could get up the courage to stare right into them, you'd swear you could see angel fish, sea plants, coral beds and even sea anemones. You will find adventure in this easy to read paperback book. T.Katz visually paints a picture of Miss L'eau pedaling furiously towards the sea. James is shocked when she deliberately goes into the ocean and does not surface. If you love the ocean as much as I, then you'll find yourself taking deeper breaths continually and smelling the salty air while eagerly turning pages. It's very easy to finish the book in one sitting... The heart of this fun loving book is that children can change the world and protect our planet!

Miss L'eau is great for everyone.,

This book is too cute. It is a very short chapter book with only 58 pages. I think it is a great book for kids 8 to 11. It teaches awareness of our planet, responsibility, teamwork, commitment. I enjoyed reading as James and David discovered a huge Secret about Miss L'eau. Instead of telling everyone they talked to her first, which uncovered a need for help. James and David didn't quit when the going got tough! They stuck it out and accomplished something so amazing!

Miss L'eau for Everyone,
This review is from: Miss L'eau (Perfect Paperback)
I found this short story to be very inviting. The author is very descriptive and writes from a 6th graders point of view. You almost feel as if you are there with them, on their adventures. She does a great job bringing moral, philanthropy, community service, conservation in our world and the environment to our attention and that kids are people too and to value our time with them.
T. Katz also reminds us that, it takes a village to raise a child, but also the child reminds us about reality. A great read for everyone. Enjoy! Loretta Lynn Leda author, writer

"Miss L'eau" by T. Katz is a delightful chapter book with an excellent message.
James and David like their teacher, Miss L'eau. She's a lot like the other teachers at their school, yet, there's something different about her too. And she has the most amazing eyes. One day, James seeks shelter from a storm in the boys' secret hiding place by the old lighthouse. James thinks he sees something, but certainly that can't really be what he saw. Suddenly Miss L'eau is more mysterious than ever. The boys are determined to figure out her secret. They don't know, however, how much that secret will change their lives..and perhaps, the world. In this exciting and fun short chapter book, the story focuses on two young boys and their teacher. While there are other characters popping in from time to time, in true chapter book format the number of characters is limited, allowing young readers to easily grasp everything that is going on. The mystery surrounding Miss L'eau and why she is in Grant Harbor keeps readers turning the pages. In a short amount of time, James and David go from giving little consideration to the ocean that they have lived next to all their lives, to strong proponents of protecting the ocean and marine life. "Miss L'eau" will show young readers how easy and fun it can be to take care of the world around them and to encourage others to do the same. |
