A Look Inside Miss Lina's Ballerinas

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1–Miss Lina has eight students in her house in Messina: Christina, Edwina, Sabrina, Justina, Katrina, Bettina, Marina, and Nina. In four lines of two, they dance doing math, while they read, at the park, at the zoo, and at the beach. But with the addition of a new student, Regina, the girls are unable to perform in their familiar formation and chaos ensues. When Miss Lina patiently instructs her ballerinas to arrange themselves in a new configuration, order is restored: “everything's perfect now there are nine,/because dancing in three rows of three is divine….” The delightful colored pencil and pastel illustrations, with an appropriate dose of pink, beautifully complement the simple, rhyming text. The children are full of movement and expression, and the setting has a Parisian feel. Reminiscent of Ludwig Bemelmans's Madeline, this will be a crowd pleaser with aspiring ballerinas and also makes a great introduction to a math lesson on number groupings.–Rachel Kamin, North Suburban Synagogue Beth El, Highland Park, IL. 5.0 out of 5 stars Cute illustrations and great moral October 31, 2010
Format:Hardcover
Eight ballerinas who do everything together learn to make adjustments to their dancing days with the arrival of a new dancer. As the new ballerina turns the girls into a class of nine, they have to learn to dance in rows of three instead of four and make other changes in their day-to-day living. This book is a cute rhyming book that teaches the advantages of including others and is illustrated with fun drawing of little dancers. My seven year old dancing daughter loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful November 20, 2010
By Veriloq
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought one of these for a Christmas gift for a granddaughter who loves all things "girl-y". When it arrived, the cover was smudged so I used the account options to see about a replacement. The replacement was easily and quickly taken care of, actually the next day--very nice. I liked the book so much I immediately ordered another for my other granddaughter. The artwork is lovely throughout, very charming. I know the girls will like the repetition of the names, very musical. I know I'll enjoy reading it to them. I can see it as a springboard to their role-playing. This would make a nice gift for girls toddler and far beyond.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice July 25, 2011

As a former librarian, I can tell you this story is perfect for little girls. Rhyming words capture their interest and they don't even realize they are learning about multiple concepts. In addition to ballet, the girls learn about math, problem solving and friendship. This book will appeal to little ballerinas of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting & Rhythmic January 22, 2011
Format:Hardcover
My 2.5 year old daughter LOVES this book. I first checked it out from the library because she is a ballet fanatic, and we read it so much I purchased our own copy. The rhythmic cadence and clever rhyming scheme make it a joy to read. As I read it out loud, I stop before the end of each line and let my daughter supply the last word, which she shouts out with glee. Her favorite is to say the rhyming names of all eight girls, ending with an exuberant, "Nina!" The illustrations are enchanting, and my daughter loves pointing out the clothing, hairstyles and other little details. There is also some nice synonym usage in the book, pertaining to such words as fluxommed, perplexed, and befuddled, which has resulted in "mixed up and muddled" becoming one of my daughter's new favorite phrases! The concept of mathematical sets is an added bonus, which no doubt is also seeping into the 2-year-old brain by osmosis. I can see this aspect of the book becoming a jumping off point for learning more about sets as she gets older. Overall, a wonderful book that most any little girl would love, ballet fanatic or otherwise, that is especially suited for reading aloud together.
