5.0 out of 5 stars Barbara Metzger: The Queen of Comedy, March 12, 2003
This review is from: Miss Lockharte's Letters (Regency Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
I am a huge fan of Barbara Metzger. Her books are a delight on every page, and "Miss Lockharte's Letters" is no exception. I was lucky enough to find a copy of this book: Hopefully, you'll be lucky, too.

Rosellen Lockharte thinks she's dying of a fever. In a moment of delirium, she writes letters to the people who have left impressions on her short life. Of course... she doesn't die, and the embarrasing letters have already done their damage. Now, she thinks someone's out to murder her! Much to her dismay, Lord Stanford (he was the recipient of one of her more hateful letters) comes to her rescue!

The whole book is just a comedy of errors. It's an absolute riot! Rosellen has more pluck than any heroine I can remember. Lord Stanford is dashing, but imperfect (who wants a PERFECT hero?). The Heatherstone twins (a couple of red-headed cooks) are absolutely hilarious--as is "Buck." (I don't want to spoil anything for you).

Get this book! I smiled the whole way through, and I laughed out loud! Let Barbara Metzger treat you to her delightful humor!

(For a similar experience, find a copy of "Snowdrops and Scandalbroth" and "The Primrose Path." Though are also hilarious Metzger novels!)

5.0 out of 5 stars really great!!!!, September 7, 1998

This review is from: Miss Lockharte's Letters (Regency Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
Hey, I really liked this one, really good. A lot of humor, and a hero that thinks like a man. A load of funny characters, and ofcourse the happy ending. This sort of reading should be pure fun escapism, but well written pure fun escapism. This book delivers 100%

4.0 out of 5 stars Farce with wonderfully inept villains, May 20, 2000
This review is from: Miss Lockharte's Letters (Regency Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
It all starts because Miss Lockharte thinks she is dying. She's going to dye, so she might as well tell people what she really thinks. She writes a few letters to get some things off her chest. She forgives those who have done her wrong -- except the arrogant Viscount Stanford.

But she doesn't die. And the letters go out anyway. The results range from attempted "rescue" by inept twins to attempted murder by inept villains.

There is a romance, of course, but it doesn't have a strong part in this story. It is overshadowed by the farce. I think a stronger romance would have made this book a keeper. If you prefer farce to romance, you might love this book even more than I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars A TOTALLY DELIRIOUS RIOT ! U'LL BE ROLLIN' DOWN THE FLOOR !, March 12, 2000
This review is from: Miss Lockharte's Letters (Regency Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
Who'd have thunk a 213 pages romance could be so much fun ? My 1st taste of Miss Metzger that whetted my appetite 4 more of her brilliant works. Odd but huggable crowd that consists of : feather-brained twins, a vain, whiny cousin, an enchanting klutz of a heroine that constantly attracts misfortunes like bees to a flower, a cranky, high-handed, gorgeous hero, a loser of a villain & an over-eating mutt named Buck, all thrown together in a feverishly funny romp that ended in an uproarious climax. If U're feeling depressed & in need of somethin' to lift the gloom, U owe it to yourself to enjoy an hour or 2 of pure, unadulterated entertainment. U'll have a helluva time reading this action & humor-packed regency. This novel is 1 of those must-buy-read-and-keep collectibles !

4.0 out of 5 stars Miss Lockharte reminds one of Heyer, June 12, 2011
Others have described the plot rather well, so I shall refrain from that. Let me just say that this is a lovely, light Metzger. In fact, I'll go so far as to say that this is the best Metzger that I've read. This book is the closest I've come to an Heyer romance.

The plot is tight enough and the characters are very engaging. The plot moves slowly at first and the build-up is quite hilarious. (I love the twins, especially).

The only thing that keeps this from being a 5 star book is how short it is. The ending is a little rushed; all the loose ends are briefly mentioned so as to tie them up as tight as possible in as few words as possible. I wish Metzger was allowed free reign to write longer books. I would certainly have enjoyed another 3 or 4 chapters.

Other than that, I wish there were more books like this: light and funny, without being burdened by hot, heavy and unnecessary sex scenes. (So, you should know: there is no sex here).

NOTE: I used the option to download to the computer and then transfer it to the Kindle and worked beautifully.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Regency, January 10, 2002

This review is from: Miss Lockharte's Letters (Regency Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
Miss Lockharte, who thinks she is dying, sends letters to people who have wronged her in the past, and tells them exactly what she thinks of them, and it is not pretty. Oh, no, she does not die but the letters had already been sent. Even her letter to the handsome Viscount Stanford. This regency farce is fun, quick reading but I also think the book could have been a little longer on the romance between Miss lockharte and the Viscount. The farce is fun, but readers read regency romances for - yes, romance!

This review is from: Miss Lockharte's Letters (Regency Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
I LOVE THIS BOOK! Yes, it is a little bit on the short side. However, it is VASTLY enjoyable. There are so many unexpected turns in the story, and I was frequently very amused, sometimes even laughing out loud. Some reviewers felt that there was not enough romance, but I really don't agree with that. Lots of Regency romances are light on romance. Just look at Jane Austen's books. I LOVE (clean) romances, and this one is right up there with my favorites, especially since it made me laugh so much. I did feel that ONE scene at the end was rushed. But it was an excellent book, and one of the few books that I might actually end up re-reading some day. I am loving Barbara Metzgers books. Bravo! And in praise of the author, across the half dozen books I've read so far, her characters are very likable, "real", and varied. I can't praise Miss Lockharte's Letters enough! I would recommend it to anyone, even people who don't tend to read romance novel, it's that entertaining.

4.0 out of 5 stars So much Fun!, January 31, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
On these cold winter days with a snowstorm blowing outside, I have found refuge in the delightful comedies of Barbara Metsger. This one is my favorite as it opens with a heroine who thinks she is dying and writes letters to those who wronged her, stimulating a series of responses ranging from murder attempts to a reluctant hero who tries to rescue her--but she is just not very cooperative. Now that she is no longer feverish, the lady tries to take charge of her own problems, but other people keep getting in the way. Reminds me of the screwball comedies in the old movies, not at all realistic, but so much fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful story, January 9, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This was my first book by this author and I must say that I was not only pleasantly surprised but went on to purchase more books by her. I could not stop laughing, crying and smiling all at once. The book was well written and managed to convey a beautiful heartbreaking story of the plight of Miss Lockharte but still make the reader laugh out loud. A definite must read.
