Book Description

How far are you willing to go for fame? Fifteen-year-old Charlene Shaw runs away from home to pursue dreams of becoming an actress. Taking a chance, she meets a truck driver with a cross around his neck. She’s always been a bit hesitant about God granting her “luck,” but takes this as a golden opportunity to get closer to her goal. On the rugged road to stardom, Charlene’s using everything in her might to erase the past and the baby she abandoned—her daughter, Raven. Just thinking about Raven sends chills of fear down Charlene’s spine.

*Now including a First Chapter excerpt from Miss Scandalous (Shaw Family Saga, Book 2)

Meanwhile, Raven Shaw grows up in her mother’s hometown, tight-knit Bellwood, North Carolina and has been dubbed “Miss Goodie Two Shoes.” She’s head of the children’s choir, but nothing can calm her rage when someone gossips about her mom—she takes up for a woman she doesn’t even know. On a mission, Raven wants to learn about Charlene, but her grandparents and people of the small town won’t reveal anything. All the while, she finds love. Now Raven knows she can’t be fully committed to the man that has her heart until she learns why her mother neglected her.

When mother’s and daughter’s path collide, Raven asks her mother two requests—two family secrets that can ruin both of their lives. Leading Charlene and Raven down the road of feeling like a “Miss Nobody.”

Miss Nobody pulled me in from the very beginning and never let go. This being my first family saga, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. My emotions were raw by the time I turned the last page.

Miss Nobody is about a family with more secrets than one family can handle. Lies, greed, and fame have dismantled each of their lives and none of them can break the destructive cycle.

I found myself alternating between caring for certain characters and hating others. Dunlap knows how to develop a variety of characters that leave lasting impressions on the reader. And the complexity the storyline kept me reading page after page. I simply had to know what was going to happen next.
Miss Nobody focuses on the young Raven and her estranged mother Charlene. I found them compelling in different ways. They both go through struggles in finding their true identity. Raven just wants to learn more about her mother and father, while Charlene works towards becoming famous with very little luck. And though mother and daughter couldn't be more different, they also share more in common than either would like to admit.

I would highly recommend reading Miss Nobody. The surprises are abundant and the revelations are shocking. You will not be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wounded Mothers & Daughters September 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Fifteen year old Charlene Shaw is running away from small town Bellwood, North Carolina. Charlene has dreams of making a name for herself in Hollywood and she is determined not to return to Bellwood until she does. Charlene missed her bus out of town and hitched a ride with a white truck driver, Roy Timmons. Otis and Annette Shaw had not heard from their daughter in a year when they are called to make a trip to Iowa. Upon their arrival, instead of finding Charlene they discover her six month old "blue-eyed" daughter, Raven. Charlene was on her way to Los Angeles.

Dunlap alternates the chapters between Charlene trying to make it big in Los Angeles and Raven growing up with Annette and Otis in Bellwood. Charlene is working as a waitress while auditioning and trying to cope with her inner demons. Raven longs to hear from her mother but instead she hears plenty local gossip about her. Her grandparents refuse to talk about Charlene. Raven is plagued by her mother's absence and not knowing who her father is but she is comforted by her best friend Jonathan DuBois Jr. Jonathan's French mother, Elise, hates he and Raven's friendship and with good reason. Raven and Jonathan's childhood friendship soon blossoms into a love affair. They are faced with numerous challenges. While Raven grows up, Charlene finally makes it in Hollywood landing a spot on a Soap Opera. Charlene also starts some new relationships of her own one with a man, Damien, and others with valium and alcohol.

Dunlap does a great job of displaying how love can cross class and privilege boundaries. There is enough family betrayal and secrets to keep you turning pages until you get to the very end. This plot is saturated with twists, turns, and shocking revelations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Characters Stay With you September 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Every family has secrets and the Shaw family is no exception. Nicole Dunlap has brought her characters to life in a manner that I continue to think of them long after I have finished reading the story. Their flaws and strengths, their weakness and pride, the generosity and their greed; all of these things come together. I don't want to give the plot away, nor do I want to over-hype it. Simply put, I did not want to put the book down. It was a page turner for me. I can't wait for the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read June 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Miss Nobody is honestly the first book I've read since having my son two years ago. I was immediately engaged in the story line and could not stop turning the pages. The Shaw Family Saga definitely reintroduced me to the realm of reading and showed me exactly how liberating books can be. I look forward to what will be in store for us in part two of this series. Congrats to the author Nicole Dunlap on this wonderful publication!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well -Seasoned Dish May 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Now I truly understand what it means when Nicole Dunlap describes herself as the "gumbo-genre" author. On the outside of every relationship everything appears one way. But when you dig deeper, there are so many varations of the "truth".

Nicole has done a tremendous job in this opening book of the Shaw Family Saga series. I originally believed that Miss Nobody would solely focus on the relationship between Charlene -a runaway mother, and Raven - the child she left behind. Little did I know that it was just the icing on the cake. So what did I discover? Everyone has at least several secrets and that are not always the obvious. Every character in this book, especially Annette, Charlene, Raven, Elise, Jonathan, and Jon had (and have) rather challenging journeys. Sadly, the truth was scarce whenever possible; I've learned this quite well and look forward to how Nicole will further taunt us readers with this saga. Please be certain that I purposely give no spoilers because the tale needs to be experienced first hand.

Nicole has done a fabulous job of seasoning up, layering and serving out a terrific opening novel of drama-drama-drama! Keep up the great job! I look forward to her next "dish".

More About the Author

Nicole Dunlap holds a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and Child Development, and a Masters Degree in Educational Counseling from Azusa Pacific University. She lives her dream of counseling in the inner city of San Bernardino; motivating teens dealing with depression, pregnancy, gang membership and abuse. But, she admits to two passions-writing being her first love. She has been self dubbed the "gumbo genre" novelist, because books shouldn't be lightly seasoned... Her stories revolve around family and relationships, women's issues, drizzled with drama, peppered with suspense, and finished off with aromatic notes of romance. The Shaw Family Saga pays homage to dysfunctional mother-daughter relationships, with well developed characters that readers can root for; love them, hate them, cry for, and most of all, yearn to flip through the pages to the end of that character's journey.
