I loved Miss Pistachio's Big Day, especially because it was in both English and Spanish. It was adorable, and the pictures were so cute! The teacher reminded me of my Kindergarten teacher! I would recommend this book to kids who enjoy reading stories about people. [e-mail]

About the Author

Miriam Rutland is a veteran elementary school teacher of nearly 20 years. Miriam began writing about her experiences as a classroom teacher in the form of realistic fiction, and thus was born Miss Pistachio's Big Day, her first childrn's picture book. Miriam began her writing career after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in September of 2001, just two weeks after the national tragedy on Sept. 11th. Miriam is an avid reader, and has been writing since she was a child. She is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators as well as P.E.O, an international philanthropic educational organization. Miriam also is an accomplished singer, and currently sings with the Miami Shores Presbyterian Church choir. Ms. Rutland resides in Miami with her husband and two teenage daughters, where she continues to teach First Grade.

Miss Pistachio's Big Day

Miss Pistachio's Big Day, by Miriam Rutland, is a wonderful biligual book for elementary age children. Written in English, with a complete Spanish translation, this book would also be excellent to read to younger children preparing to start school. The heartwarming story endears you to the main character and children will enjoy the illustrations portraying various backgrounds. I recommend this book for everyone. It should be in every Lower school library in the country, as well as Middle and Upper School Spanish classes.

An endearing story of a veteran teacher's start of the school year. As an elementary school librarian, I am always looking for something new to share with "my kids" in the first few weeks of school and I will definitely be using "Miss Pistachio" in the beginning of the school year. The story is from the teacher's perspective so children see that the start of the school year is a "Big Day" for their classroom teacher too!
