About the Author

Carrie L. Nelson had been quilting and teaching quilting classes for a couple of decades when a Phoenix quilt shop asked her to develop a written pattern for one of her most popular teaching quilts. We sold 200 in about six weeks, Carrie says. Since then, Carrie has been designing under the name of Miss Rosie's Quilt Company.

I bought this sight unseen as I am a big fan of Miss Rosie and Carrie Nelson. It is a keeper, although I discovered too late that I already owned 3 of the 13 patterns in this collection. So ... you might want to check your own stash of patterns to see if purchasing this book is a net plus for you. To help, here is the full list of 13 patterns:

501
Double Duty
Elizabeth
Ginger Belle
Going Buggy
Home Sweet Home
Jellystone
Open Door
Opening Day
Raise The Roof
Three Coins
True Blue
Whirligig

Personally, I do not mind having some duplication when it comes to Carrie Nelson's Miss Rosie's Spice Of Life Quilts! In fact, Nelson duplicates what works best for all her publications: fun projects, great colorations done in my favorite fabric lines (to which she always gives proper credit and identification), flawless instructions and diagrams, and her signature personal intros for every project.

And as with most patterns in the Miss Rosie domain: If you are an entry-level quilter, you should know that most of Carrie Nelson's projects tend to be twin-bed sized or larger. (Except for the Schnibbles series, that is.) And there can be a LOT of blocks in each project; for instance, "True Blue" (the project on the cover) has a 100 repeated blocks. But please don't let this daunt you. Trust me, you will fall in love with ALL of Nelson's quilts and you will find inspired ways to make them your own treasured pieces.

One last positive note: This is a Leisure Arts publication, and I have been so pleased to see how they have improved their books over the years, with only a modest and reasonable increase in price.

Love, love, love this book by Carrie L. Nelson! I knew nothing about Carrie before purchasing this book on Amazon but the photo on the cover was intriguing with an interesting-looking quilt and a photo of a lovely Golden Retriever sitting next to it. (Being a fellow dog lover, I thought I'd try it out. Little did I know that "Miss Rosie" in the title was actually her dog!) I was not disappointed, in fact I'm going to rate this book in the top five of my personal library of quilting books... and since I've been teaching quilting for over 30 years, I have a lot of them.
Carrie's designs take scrappy quilts to a new level. She apparently loves to go crazy with lots of different fabrics but it works. All of her designs are fun and beautiful and she includes a nice variety of patterns in her book. She has many designs that are unique to her, but she also has an exceptional way of taking a traditional design and adding a new twist. (For example she has a very scrappy Irish Chain with Ohio Stars in the open spaces between the chains. Also in one quilt she took a Bear's Paw and kicked it up by piecing the "paw" section with different fabrics and adding a simple, yet effective pieced sashing and border.)Most all of her quilts in this book have a scrappy "Country" feel, but I'm sure you could easily change things up with your own color schemes.
Carrie includes many wonderful diagrams in color for every quilt to help you piece each section as you go along. One great feature is that each quilt pattern is self- contained and has all the instructions you need so you don't have to keep going back to a reference page to find a particular technique. (She repeats what is needed for every quilt.) She has used strip piecing and other speed techniques throughout to make your sewing fun and quick.

The patterns in this book are well-written and easy to follow. They seem to take a lot of fabric, but that's probably because they're all designed with a "scrappy" look in mind, so you'll need lots of little bits of fabric for the finished product.
This book has definitely helped me to whittle down my stash, and with amazing results! The book uses a lot of neutral and "Country" color schemes, but all of the projects I've tried look great in lots of bright colors.

I love Miss Rosie and I love this book. It has given me many fresh new ideas for my future quilt projects. I love the colors that she has in her quilts, the colors go with many home decor schemes and are practical. I am so tired of quilt patterns that have white backgrounds - not practical at all for a busy family.

The instructions are well written and easy to follow. I am so impressed with Carrie Nelson's book that I will buy others that she has written.
