5.0 out of 5 stars I love the Miss Spider books!
I absolutely love the miss spider books. David Kirk is so talented. Miss Spider's Wedding is my favorite. I love the story of the two spiders falling in love. It is a lesson for young children that you don't have to be popular to be loved. David Kirk use of rhyme is wonderful. I really enjoy reading his book because they flow so well. 2.0 out of 5 stars Good but way too mature for it's targeted audience.
This book is fabulous. If you're older than 15 years old.

It's very well written. I like it alot.

But, for my son..it's a bit much.

It's plot is much to mature for kids.

It makes hints at sex, shows outright violence, and includes name calling (numerous times).

It's not a book that we will be reading to our kids any time soon. It will be put away until they are older.

It's unfortunate because it is very interesting and well written. Just has more violence, sex, name calling than I would like for my kids.

And i'm not one of those stuck up parents..we all know what i mean. This book is still too much, in my opinion.

His artwork in these books is tremendous. I love his use of color. It puts me in a good mood just seeing his pictures. David Kirk has many other Miss Spider books just as good as this one. I recommend them all.

1.0 out of 5 stars not impressed, October 4, 2008
This review is from: Miss Spider's Wedding (Hardcover)
My children have watched this show for a while now and over all I didn't mind the show. Last week my 5 year old daughter took this book out of the school library. Everyone was excited so we cuddled up on the sofa to read it. I was HORRIFIED and had to stop reading.

The Pictures have beautiful colors however the subject of the pictures would give any child nightmares. The rhyming makes everything sound pretty but those rhymes are not nice. They are rude and mean. An example is:

His hot breath sprayed Miss Spider's face
With all the force he had,
He screamed, 'You will reveal his name!"
She said, "I won't, you cad!"

He turned his back and brayed, "I must
Go find and grind him into dust!
So foolish woman, be forewarned,
Spiderus Reeves shall not be scorned."

That is only two little paragraphs. I stopped reading it and explained to my children that sometimes books were not good for us to read and it was my job to make sure they had good things in their minds not garbage.

Miss Spider is now officially banned in our house.

I strongly suggest parents take the time to read the book before bringing it into your home.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, but maybe too mature for the preschool set, September 28, 2000
This review is from: Miss Spider's Wedding (Hardcover)
This book is every bit as beautiful as the other Miss Spiderbooks and I loved it. However, it is my two year old daughter's leastfavorite of the series. I think the subject matter [which I findquite beautiful and touching] is a little "mature" for her. There is also quite a bit more text in this book than the others, soshe may enjoy it more in a year or two when she has a bit more of anattention span. But, like all the other Miss Spider books, it is awonderful, fun-to-read book that Mommies and Daddies can enjoy just asmuch as their children do.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gorgeously illustrated quirky tale of insect romance, May 7, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Miss Spider's Wedding (Hardcover)

Brilliantly-colored illustrations jump from the pages of this charming book. The story is surprisingly adult, however.

Miss Spider is rescued from the poisonous clutches of a blonde-coiffed arachnid lothario by her true (and a bit nerdy) love. Ages 6-9 are probably the best audience for this tomboyish little romance.

In a special-interest side note: Graphic designers and lovers of computer-generated illustrations will probably want to have this particular story book in their collections

5.0 out of 5 stars A Charming Gem of a Picture Book, January 26, 2001
By
This review is from: Miss Spider's Wedding (Hardcover)
Both you and your kids are in for a treat that's as charming as it is colorful with David Kirk's delightful picture book, Miss Spider's Wedding. There are so many things right with this gem of a book it's hard to know where to start with comments. Since Miss Spider's Wedding is, after all, a picture book, it's probably wholly appropriate to begin with the artwork. Oh! What I would give to see the original oils on canvas! Setting that aside, it truly seems to me as if author-illustrator David Kirk's palette knows no earthly bounds. Even a quick glance through the lavishly produced pages of Miss Spider's Wedding will tell you that much. From one page to the next a rich array of multihued greens, grays, yellows, blues...browns, reds, oranges, blacks and pinks awaits to delight the eyes of adults and kids alike. But that's not all. Mr. Kirk has also lovingly rendered a cast of wholly unique insect characters, from the charming Miss Spider herself to the dastardly Spiderus Reeves. Each has their own personality and seems to spring to life from backgrounds filled with myriad details, such as the delicate patterns found in maple tree leaves, the silky look and feel of spider webs, the writing on a quarter used as a table, and more. Hours of enjoyment await both young and old in discovering these kinds of individual details in Miss Spider's Wedding alone. Then...there's the story. And a fine love story it is! One fine day, Miss Spider meets Holley, and knows at once in her heart and soul that he's for her and she's for him. Even meddlesome but well-meaning beetle friends and an exceptionally vain villain can't break the bond of love between Miss Spider and her Holley no matter how hard they try, and soon every bug alive is invited to the wedding of the year. All of this is told in verse that's easy-to-read and understand. I highly recommend David Kirk's Miss Spider's Wedding whether you're an adult with a picture book collection of your own or an adult with kids looking for books they will love you for finding. I would also recommend you consider Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg, God Bless The Gargoyles by Dav Pilkey, Night Of The Gargoyles by Eve Bunting and all of the Harry Potter books by J. K. Rowling. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lusciously appealing, and glowing with full color, April 9, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Miss Spider's Wedding (Hardcover)
Clearly, (though Kirk's intentions were probably otherwise), this book is not a children's book. The simple plot is presented in a cluttered mess of difficult adverbs which the majority of children do not follow. Nevertheless, any child will immediately be swept into the absolutely brilliant, lushly painted illustrations. The rich, vivid colors create a burning glow that radiates Kirk's amazing talent.

Even if the delicately poignant story of a romance does not ring any bells to your child, she will find herself captivated by the illustrations alone. I still enjoy this book very much, and applaud Kirk for both his amazing illustrations and his skill with rhyme.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is such a lovely book on love and marriage., July 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Miss Spider's Wedding (Hardcover)
Miss Spider's Wedding, by Daivid Kirk is not only a beautiful book to look at, but is also a beautiful book on love and marriage. Since I have no children to read it to, I read it to my husband. I love the part "For once love penetrates the heart, It spreads to cloud the eye."and later on when it finishes the thought, "How can we fully recognize the beauty seen through true love's eyes?" I often am asked why I married my husband and those words are so much the perfect answer. My husband would just say, "for every male warthog there's a female warthog." I guess I'm just a bit more the romantic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brightly colourful and attension grabbing., February 19, 1999
This review is from: Miss Spider's Wedding (Hardcover)
The illustrations are bright and beautiful which capture the children's attension immediately. Then as you go on to read the perfectly rhyming text it also then captures the reader. The text is so well written that the words tend to flow with ease and make it a pure joy to read. Loved by both parent and child.

1.0 out of 5 stars A big disappointment after the first book, January 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Miss Spider's Wedding (Hardcover)
We were very excited to buy another Miss Spider book for a gift. After reading it, we returned it to the store. The theme of the story is far too adult for the target age group. Also, we bought the book for a little girl, and I found the messages regarding women needing to be married a bit dated. Also, for the littler ones, the antagonist is too scary. The only good part of the book is the beautuiful illustrations.
