I bought this CD after reading about it in the Gramophone Magazine. It was given the best Early Music Award for 2008. It is superb. This was my first encounter with this wonderful but neglected English composer his dates are circa 1485-1557. If choral music of the English renaissance appeals to you, Tallis, Taverner, and Tye, et al. Then you should enjoy this CD. Other choral groups I am familiar with such as The Tallis Scholars, and the Sixteen, use female singers for the treble line. Here on this CD boys are used. They sing with remarkable clarity, and sweetness of tone the recording is wonderfully atmospheric. I believe there are more recordings of Ludford's music on the ASV label which I intend to explore. All in all it is a stunning Cd. Buy it and spend an hour in paradise.

Nicholas Ludford's music buzzes with sweet-natured generosity. His long, complex phrasings glide like birds in aerial ballet. For all their expansive sweep and play, Ludford's musical canvases are also intricate. The Choir of New College rises to the challenge of these generous compositions with a broad, open sound that brims with intelligence and comprehension. The men and boys of the choir can both subtly limn the sensitive counterpoint and also convey Ludford's often sheer exuberance. It's a joy to hear this brilliant but neglected music sung so well by the forces for which it was written. Of things to take to exile on the proverbial desert island, this disk would be on my shortlist.

This is a very good disc of some lovely polyphony from Tudor England. Ludford was a very fine composer who forms a sort of bridge between Fayrfax and Taverner, and the mass and antiphons here form a good sample of his work.

Ludford's music is typical of the English style of the period, with wonderful, rolling sonorities and ætherial high treble lines. The effect is very beautiful and quite stunning at times, and Ludford had the skill to write in an individual, distinctive way which never becomes samey or mediocre.

Edward Higginbottom has made many, many fine recordings with his New College choir over the years and this is very good, too. The choir have excellent technique and blend and a fine sense of the text. This is a full liturgical setting of the mass with plainchant propers, so you need to like your polyphony set in a plainchant base. I do, very much, and the chant is a strength of this disc. The choir is at its best when really rolling out the sonorous lower register parts, and these are exceptionally good. I found the sound on some of the higher passages a little thin and uncertain for my taste, but this may just be me. I prefer the more precise sound of a small ensemble rather than a cathedral or chapel choir in this repertoire, but if you like a churchy sound, this will suit you very well - and the recording quality is excellent.

My taste is more for The Cardinall's Musick's superlative recording of this mass Nicholas Ludford, Vol.2 and of Ludford's other three Festal Masses in Festal Masses (now scandalously unavailable) but this is a very good disc with some sublime highlights and I can recommend it very warmly.
