Book Description

This Fashion Avenue Mini is a novelette. It would take up about 50 or 60 pages of print, or 13,000 words if you like counting that way.

This is a prequel to Dead Is the New Black.
-After a crazy night of club-hopping and who-knows-what-else, Laura's sister Ruby shows up Sunday morning with one Manolo Blahnik--a disappointing turn of events, considering her boss loaned her a full pair that she expects back first thing Monday. The right shoe has to be somewhere! The hipster bar? The smelly restaurant? The club that doesn't exist?

There is only one way to find out: spend Sunday backtracking up and down Manhattan, reliving an evening of high drama to find Ruby's missing Blahnik stiletto.

If you enjoyed The Hangover and Sex in the City, try The Case of the Missing Blahnik.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delicious February 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Like one of those tasty little cake pops from that corporate coffee place, The Case of the Missing Blahnik is a delicious sample of what is to come from the Fashion Avenue Mystery series. A prequel to Dead Is The New Black, the cast of characters is introduced, a dilemma presents itself, and hilarity ensues over blackout hangovers, dumpster dives and a very expensive missing shoe. Take a bite. You'll enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty and entertaining May 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you like that snarky Sex and the City humor, then this book is for you. I absolutely loved the characters and their antics were hilarious as they tried to locate a very expensive shoe lost sometime during a drunken stupor. The writing was tight and the pacing fast, making for a quick, enjoyable read. After reading the sample of the author's full-length novel in the back of this book, I can't wait to start on Dead is the New Black next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent characters, great plot November 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoy reading faced-paced books like this one that move smoothly and flow in a way that keeps me turning pages. Add great characters and an interesting plot, and you've got the perfect package for a short story. Laura is a tough, solid character whose wit had me laughing several times throughout the book. I enjoyed it.

3.0 out of 5 stars So so January 10, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read this after the first book. I loved the first book and thought this would be a little better. It did introduce the characters and set up the background for future stories. I recommend reading her 1st book after finishing this introductory novella.

3.0 out of 5 stars Missing Blahnik; blah storyline... June 30, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Case of the Missing Blahnik is sort of a short throw-away prequel to the other Laura Carnegie/Fashion Ave mysteries. There wasn't much mystery, suspense, romance etc in this book. Ruby (Laura's sister), during a night of drunken carousing, somehow lost one of the uber-expensive Blahniks she borrowed from her employer. Laura needs to help Ruby find it so she won't lose her job (or worse, lose face) with her employer. Evidently, being thought of as a screw-up (even if you are), is worse than losing your job.

The hunt for the missing shoe just wasn't very interesting, no matter how sparkly or expensive the shoe was, and nothing about the characters or situation, involved me enough to even care. Luckily, I'm already acquainted with Laura, Jeremy and the other main characters and know how great they are, so this didn't bother me too much. Really loved the three other books and guess I shouldn't complain too much since I got this one free, but if you read this one first and are disappointed, please don't stop --- give the other three books in this series a chance or try some of Ms. DeMaio-Rice's other books (also writes as CD Reiss). That's my take on it, as always, YMMV.

3.0 out of 5 stars A writer's Notes- Not a Prequel October 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is certainly not a polished brief introduction to the other books in this series. It is not even a rough draft and should be viewed as preliminary thoughts the writer has about her characters and the leitmotifs she will develop and intertwine in her furture works.

If one were to read this and think that it is demonstrative of the writer's craftsmanship, then I feel that such a person would be reluctant to persue the works further. Rather it is a curiousity in that it points to the trend that will be developed in future e.g. obsession with brands, fashion etiquette, city night life, and the eternal quest for romance in the big city. Those who wish to write should read this to see how poorly expressed ideas can germinate it polished story telling. Why this was released as a "prequel" causes me to ponder about the stratagems of the publishing world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick, fun read March 18, 2015

This was a shortish novel, or novelette, or whatever, but even so, I found it really interesting from beginning to end. Although this book is set in Manhattan's fashion industry, I did not find that you needed a fashion background to follow this story. Ruby and Laura seem to work at very high end companies (believe it or not, most of the companies on 42nd Street are NOT high-end), and this gives the story a bit of glamour.

This was a fun story and I really enjoyed watching Laura and Ruby chase the missing Blahnik all over Manhattan. I felt that the characters really came alive, the story was fast paced, and it was well written. Considering that this was a free download, this was a real bargain!

I will be looking for other books by this author.

3.0 out of 5 stars slow and too much filler
It was just OK. Too much filler made story slow. Shallow story plot and characters, kept hoping it would take off but it never did.

Fun to read but awfully light and obvious. What saved it for me was the background of the fashion industry.

More About the Author

I moved to Los Angeles to study screenwriting at USC, and even though you couldn't drag me back into the screenwriting business with the promise of money or candy, I love screenplay structure. Use it all the time. It is the crowbar that removes my head from my rectum when such a procedure is required.

I love all types of speculative fiction, and yes I admit to reading vampire books and YA. However, I have not yet met a vampire that inspired me enough to write about him, which is probably the only barrier between myself and a bathtub full of royalty checks.

People (meaning, my friends) have begged me for years to write about the fashion industry, so I'm doing that in the form of a cozy mystery. It's a funny story, which it had to be because the fashion industry can't be taken seriously.

On that, I bid you a fond farewell. Thanks for reading this little bio.
