john on his own,

John Herndon was the first of three openning acts for Prefuse 73 in NY last year. Performing completely on his own, using a drum kit, drum synths, a synthesizer and a laptop, he proved that he's got a lot of chutzpah. However he left most people scratching their heads, performing some amorphous noise that he occasionally punctuating with rollicking percussion. This ep shares the same sense of oddity but is ultimately rewarding, giving the listener a more polished experience. However, there are no tightly woven songs, leaving the impression that these tracks are mostly improvised. "Red Hat Attack" features occasionally inspiring mc Dose One, though in a less inspiring moment.

4.5 stars, sneak peak at an evolving hybrid,

This is short record, only 23 minutes and six songs, too short to really settle into. Tortoise fans won't be disappointed by Herndon, his knack for slipping in new beats is still unsurpassed, even track 5 with a Daft Punk type vocal overlay doesn't sound that bad, because of melodic beats that underlye the track. Dose one of Anticon appears on a few tracks vocally and astounishes on track 3 with a very rhythmic low key timbre towards the end of the track. This is an impressive debut by mixing, very adequately, the avant nature of Dose and Anticon, and electro, yet organic sounding sensibilites of Herndon and Tortoise. Looking forward too the full length.
