P.I. Angela Matelli has her hands full with her large Italian family and her business, but clears her schedule when Ev Morrow, a former mentor, shows up on her doorstep. Ev's daughter Edie has presumably been kidnapped by her estranged mother, and Angela is hired to pick up the trail. Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Lee continues the adventures of ex-marine Angela Matelli, the Boston private investigator coping with boring assignments, little money, annoying siblings, and her mother's perpetual matchmaking. In her second adventure, Angela is hired by an old marine colleague to find his missing daughter, Edie, abducted by his divorced wife. Angela finds the ex-wife easily enough, but Edie has disappeared along with a friend--whose body turns up floating in Boston Harbor. Knowing that she doesn't have much time, Angela pulls out all the stops to find the girl, hoping that she doesn't share the same fate as her friend. A compelling story, well seasoned with the flavor of Boston's Italian community and driven by Angela's scrappiness. From Kirkus Reviews

Boston p.i. Angie Matelli (The Good Daughter, 1994), several years out of the Marines, is surprised by a call from Ev Morrow, her superior officer and mentor in the Corps. Ev has flown in from California to look for his missing 14-year-old daughter Edie, and he wants Angie's help. Some months back, Edie's hard-drinking mother Earlene, whom Ev divorced years ago, had defied court orders and disappeared with his daughter. All Ev's efforts to trace the two had failed until an abruptly ended phone call from Edie the week before was traced to the Boston area. Angie's routine investigations quickly locate Edie in a suburban school, but she hasn't been in class for a week. Her teacher is sure she's grieving over the death of her best friend, Rachel McCarthy, whose body washed up on a nearby beach days before. When Angie visits the grungy house where Edie lives with her unreformed mother, she finds that Earlene hasn't seen the girl for a week but is sure she's gone back to her father. Meantime, Earlene shares her digs with slatternly waitress Bobbie, whose lovers are eventually questioned by the police and pass lie detector tests. Suspects are thin on the ground, but Angie manages to accomplish her mission, nailing a killer in the process. The author works hard, but with little success, to breathe life into Angie; her large, uningratiating family; and a clunky, unmanageable plot: a dull and drowsy second outing. -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. 4.0 out of 5 stars A good series, January 24, 2001

This review is from: Missing Eden (Paperback)
Angela Matelli is a private investigator in Boston. She receives a call from Ev Morrow who was her superior in the Marines. He wants to hire her to find his 14 year old daughter, Edie. His unstable ex-wife kidnapped her three months ago. The only clue he has is a collect phone call Edie tried to make to him. They were disconnected but he managed to trace the call to a phone booth in the Boston area. He has had himself temporarily transferred to Boston while he tries to find her.

Angela takes the case, finds the ex-wife but discovers that Edie hasn't been seen for a week. Then the body of a young girl washes up on the beach. It isn't Edie but is her best friend. Where is Edie?????

It's a fast moving story made even more interesting by Angela's large Italian family. There's a Sunday family dinner that was really fun to read. She also makes the Boston area come alive.

This is the second in a well written series. I'm looking forward to the next one.
