Biography

The 1970s was the decade that saw, at the height of the prog-rock movement, the pushing of the existing artistic and progressive boundaries and the expanding of the experimental. One of the most experimental bands of the time was Gentle Giant. The band was comprised of the Scottish brothers Phil, Derek and Ray Shulman, with Gary Green and Kerry Minnear. Lyrically they were inspired by personal… Read more in Amazon's Gentle Giant Store

3.0 out of 5 stars For completists..., April 15, 2003

This review is from: The Missing Face (Audio CD)
Made in UK in 2003, Serial# GLASS-105-CD, Playing Time 54:52

This is release number 5 from the people at GLASSHOUSE records, the label that brings us "official bootlegs".

As with each release, don't expect much in artwork, liner notes, pictures, etc. There's nothing there!

However, this time the recording quality is somewhat improved over previous releases, bringing things to an "average" level.

Recorded during the "Missing Piece" tour, the live material included here is fairly interesting because it features tracks that weren't performed on too many tours... The performances are crisp, but if you already have the "Out Of The Fire" release (which was better recorded), this disc might be somewhat redundant.

Is a live version of "The Face" enough to justify this purchase? Hmmm... don't think so...

But it's still an interesting document, the best of the first 5 releases (compared to "Live Rome 1974", "In A Palesport House", "In'terview In Concert" and "Artistically Cryme"). Hopefully upcoming releases will show more improvements.

Only recommended to completists.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun music, recording quality second rate, May 2, 2003

I've been a Gentle Giant fan since I first heard "Playing the Game" in 1975 from the Power & Glory album. As that song and the Missing Piece album are some of my favorites, I was excited about them being included on this live album. Although the song selection and performance by the group is great, the quality of the recording is second rate at best. This album should still qualify only as a bootleg. If you want a quality LIVE Gentle Giant album, stick with "Playing the Fool".
