4.0 out of 5 stars A disfunctional family, January 4, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Missing Grooms (Zebra Regency Romance) (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book from the moment I started the first chapter. The two main characters, Julia Wexton and Garth Tolton, had grown-up together but drifted apart when they became older. Both thinks the one hates the other. Julia comes from a strange household, her spinster aunt along with her twelve cats live with Julia and her father.

Julia likes her independs but her father longs for grandchildren so he decides after too many Julia escapades, he calls foster son, Garth, and family to bear witness to his plan. Julia must wed in six months, or control for ther fortune will go to Garth. Being Julia, the next morning she comes up with a list of suitable men for matrimony, and decides she will be married within a month.

Her father is thrilled, but not for long. All seven of the men on her list have disappeared. The ton is calling Julia a black widow (even though she had not married any of these men) and to make matters worst, the intended grooms mothers are fighting over who's son Julia will marry.

At first Julia thinks Garth is behind all these disappearing grooms so he can get a hand on her money. But evenually the two join forces and become reacquinted with each other.

I won't tell who is behind the kidnapping grooms, that's revealed half way through the book. The secondary characters are enjoyable, and have personalities. I gave the book four stars because some of the events are unbelievable, such as Julia never seems to have a chaperon with her and how seven men can be held together for a month with getting on each others nerves. This is not a great book but you'll have fun reading each chapter, and getting to know the characters.

4.0 out of 5 stars A classic Regency Farce....., March 27, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Missing Grooms (Zebra Regency Romance) (Paperback)
Do not pick up this book expecting a "serious" Regency. It's not. It's not supposed to be. It's a darn good farce. I laughed out loud more than once at the shenanigans....and I don't usually do that (my kids always want to know what I'm laughing at). The scene where the missing grooms all dive for cover is a hoot! I could have done without the cat allergy....it didn't seem to add much to the story...the Inspector's got enough troubles without that....

I found this author and decided to go back and read some of earlier work and this book was great. I was in the car with the husband laughing out loud - then had to explain the book he thought the humor was great too. The premise of the book; Lady Julia Wexton father told her she must marry in six months or all her fortune will be control by Garth Tolton. Garth and Julia have been friends since children until he became a rake and she became a cold fish. Julia decides to get engages in one week but her fiance start disappearing and then everything goes wrong or right??

Here is my Cindy Holbrook reading list; The Country Gentleman,The Missing Matchmaker (Zebra Regency Romance), The Reluctant Bride (Zebra Regency Romance), The Wedding Ghost (Zebra Regency Romance), The Missing Brides (Zebra Regency Romance).
